It's 7.5" Super Redhawk, SS, no scope/rings, and seems to be in very good shape. I am considering it primarily for bear protection. Please advice. Thanks.

I think it's an excellent buy.

Go gunbroker.com or {elsewhere} and see what they're going for if you want to know the current market value. (click on revolvers and type in Ruger .454)

I haven't done so yet, but I'm betting it's a pretty fair deal.

Heck, anytime you find the exact gun you want, it's COOL!

    Take care, AB.[:D]

Can you handle it 1st? How's the cylider lock up? Is tight with the hammer cocked in single action? With the cylinder open does it spin freely or drag? Does the ejector rod push through cleanly or bind like it's bent?

I'd be sure to look at the the recoil plate. Has the guy been over loading his rounds. Can you see indentations of shells with the brand of ammo indented.
(saw that on a S&W 29 once, scarey!!)

    $450 is a good deal.

The 26thed Blue Book lists the SS Ruger Super Redhawk 454 at:
    MSRP $742 100%= $667 98%=$512 95%= $387

FYI, Ruger scope rings are $50. I do not use a scope on my FA83. $450 is a good price not a great price. The RedHawk is not a well balanced gun and is very big and heavy to lug around for the express purpose of bear protection alone. Just some things to think about.

Both of my friends that owned Ruger Redhawks have since traded them off due to the recoil effect they have due to the geometry of the gun. They ended up buying FA83s like mine. Shoot an FA83 once and you will understand. The geometry of the gun is much better when it comes to handling recoil. The .454 is a recoiling round, and the Ruger Redhawk amplifies it.

Shoot it first. Its the only gun Ive ever shot that I wont shoot again without gloves or something. The kick is enormous. The thing that gets you is the trigger guard. It not designed well and will bust your knuckles and ring your hand like a bell. I would look for another brand for the 454 or get the 44 mag.

This was the Super Redhawk to.

    Just for clarification.

Super Redhawk is not the same as the Redhawk. Similar name, but different guns.

Redhawks do have bad recoil. . .Super Redhawks have much heavier frames and rubber insert grips, and a lot less recoil. In fact, because of their size and weight, they are actually pretty tame recoil-wise for the load they put out.

Super Redhawks are also massively overbuilt, among the strongest of the production revolvers, so there should be little concern about high-pressure loads.
