I can guarantee that was a staged prop gun up in the air. Neither the cameras nor the film were fast enough to capture action like that in that time period. It was very common to stage shots like this, back in the day. Much like Photoshopping is today.
Well, its certainly possible for people to juggle bayonetted rifles. . .the US military drill teams do things like that to this day. As to the advancement of photographic technology in the late 18th century, you're not correct.

This famous image sequence was captured by Eadweard Muybridge in 1857:

There are tons more like that out there if you do a search for "Muybridge", including plenthy of "action" type shots of people boxing, leaping, doing gymnastics, plus any number of moving animals.
Now in fact, I don't really know if the image in question is real or a fake, but it was certainly well within the possibility of late 19th/early 20th century photography to generate a legitimate picture like that.
