    FCD,

Now you've got me worried. I've got spiders all over and I dont kill them because I read they eat termites. What does a brown recluse look like anyhow?

type in brown recluse on a search engine. I could not get the pictures to paste .

Their abdomen is virtuaslly hairless (tunnel web and wolf spiders are hairy) , are a drab brown/biege color though the abdomen could contrast sharpley (usually darkr than the thorax), eyes are in dark contrast to the forehead and will be in three groups of two eyes (six total).

About 3/8" long and 3/16' wide as an adult.

My sister was bitten a couple of years ago. Looks like gangrene where the bite was. Took massive anti-biotic doses to stop it and still leaves a nasty wound. They are close to impossible to irradicate from a dwelling once they are in there and breeding. Like most arachnids, they don't touch their bodies or mouths with their feet which is how the poison is transmitted. Even fumigation isn't 100% effective. If it is an apartment, I'd be moving today.

Ohio State University web site. Has pictures, distribution, habits, first aid, how to exterminate (sounds difficult and takes up to six months [:0])

Selectfire may be giving good advice.

I'd advise the local health authorities also.

There is no anti-venom or treatment that has proven effective. Surgical removal of the tissue is the most common treatment.

Apparently, large areas of tissue removal or amputation is required if immediate treatment is not obtained.

I have the same problem with Hobo spiders, which have a similar bite to the recluse. I have placed those sticky glue mouse traps all around the house, along the baseboards, under the sinks, under the beds and used to catch dozens of them, lately there are fewer and fewer being caught. Spray the outside perimeter of your home and get a few dozen of those glue traps, the spiders walk onto the glue trap and then die a long, slow death from starvation...good for the little meanies!
Don't kill any other species of spiders as the other ones prey on the recluse, especially the wolf spiders...they will keep the population of recluse spiders under control.

These are dangerous vermin. I know a guy who was bitten recently. They had to surgically remove a section of his skin, on his lower abdomen (by Mr. Happy) about 6" in diameter!!![:0][:0][:0]
