AR adjustable gas blocks, and lenght

Has anyone tried the adjustable gas blocks like the ones made by JP? How well do they work? How do they they adjust the gas? Could a person modify it to have it go from "normal" to "off" easily with a thumb screw or something?
Next similar question is what length gas system to get. I have been trying to find some pics and will do some more searching. This is for the .300 Whisper I am building. I am debating on going carbine length or mid length. I am debating on getting the next size hand guards and covering the gas block for looks. I am doing a 16" bbl that will be threaded and then the suppressor will add another 8.5" in length.
