Gun Topic Alert! Range Report Sig 556

I received my new Sig 556 rifle a couple days ago and my son and I hit the range today. My boy recently bought a Sig 556 also and he had not fired his yet.

Bad thing was the weather. It was over 100 at 1000 hrs, so the enjoyment factor went down a couple notches.

No shade, no breeze and blazing hot. Reminds me of why the Arizona desert sucks May-Sept.

My rifle came with the Sig Holo-sight, but I didn't care for it so I gave it to the boy. I mounted a Trijicon TriPower w/chevron reticle on my 556 and he mounted the holo-sight on his.

The public range was full, so we opted for the nearby police range and some simple functionality work and basic sight in.

Between us we only fired about 350 rounds due to the heat and thought of a cold beer at home when done. [:I]

We "rough-bagged" the guns off my truck and got them hitting center mass on silhouette targets. My best 3 rd group was 1.5" at 100 yards, his was 2". Not all that bad for reflex sights and general sight-in off my truck. We intend to fine tune them at a later date.

After that, we worked some "move and shoot" stuff and some body/head drills while fitting in some stress and tactical reloads.

Both Sigs functioned flawlessly with zero malfunctions. The rifle is quite a bit more "nose heavy" than an AR, but this added substantially to its controllability while shooting off-hand IMO.

We used factory Sig mags and also a number of standard AR mags. All fed and functioned as intended.

Obviously the 5.56 cartridge is relatively anemic, but coupled with the weight of the rifle, felt recoil was practically nil. Ejection was positive and energetic. A word of caution...stay away from the ejection side while someone is shooting. The 556 really kicks the empties out hard (lesson on where not to place the spotting scope)[:D].

All in all, we both give two thumbs up the the Sig 556. Great rifle, fun to shoot, relatively easy to break down and clean.

A good day at the range with my son, albeit a short one. [^]

Thanks for the report. I have been kicking the idea of one of these around. What did they set you back? $1600.00-$1650.00 or so? How much for those sights? My eyes are getting old and my work with peep sights ain't so good any more.

They can be had for around $1200 and up.

The Trijicon runs in the $400-$500 range, but I already had that.

The Sig holo-sight is in the $150 range and can be ordered with the rifle, which puts the package arount $1300-$1400.

Sounds like fun. No cover for the benches. We have them at the club I shoot at but it's to keep the snow off you in the winter.[:D]

Thanks for the review. Do you have the standard model or the SWAT model? I haven't held one, but it looks like the SWAT may be more nose heavy then the std.

So for about $2500 (rifle and scope), you can do what any out-of-the-box $800 Buschmaster with iron sights can do?

Cool, what was it you didn't care for with the optics you ordered and passed along to your son?

    I have the standard model.

The SWAT Model does appear to have a heavier forearm, since it has multiple rails.

The standard has several small/short picatinny rails on it though.

Thanks for the review, I was looking at some of them today. They look nice, but it seems like a lot of money for a production gun to me.

Yep, pretty much, except it would add to about $1800. I suspect that it performs much like any other AR platform 5.56/.223 rifle, other than some FN and AK features ala the gas piston operating system.

I already have the Bushmaster w/irons though.

Course with that outlook, one could have a ruger .22, a Winchester Model 70 in 30-06, a S&W .38 and a Mossberg shotgun and not really need anything else.

That's the beauty of having extra money and the freedom to choose what you want.[;)]

Never that keen on holo-sights and I like the triple redundancy of the TriPower.

The holo-sight seemed to be of decent quality and it sighted in easily.

Not sure how long the batteries will last, but that isn't my issue any longer.

    great review.
I bought the Holo model also, and was very disappointed in the holo sight. I switched over to an Eotech and found I would catch my hand on it about everytime I racked the slide back. I settled on an Aimpoint CompM2 and a 3x aimpoint magnifer. The added piston weight up front takes a bit to get used to, but I've come to prefer it over the lighter standard ARs.

I am thrilled with this set up, the magnifer has a quick detach mount so it's great for upclose, and out to 200+ yards. I am getting right around 1" 5 shot groups at 100 yards using a brace.

I have about 1000rds through mine without a hiccup, using magpul window mags.

I have a "SWAT" version and really like it. I only have about 300rds out of mine though. The open sites that come on it are about worthless. I had a C-More site laying around from another gun I sold so put it on here to give it a try. I really like the C-More. I have a Holosight on my HK USC and love it. I do not like the Holosights on the AR's/Sigs since they are wider then the gun. The other nice thing about the C-More is that is about 1/2 the price of the Holosite. If I find another gun I like the Holosight on I will buy another one.

I sold the Magpul stock already and have a standard AR sliding stock on there at the moment (had it laying around) but I plan on doing an ACE folder for it sometime soon.
