I have two, 36 gun safes made by liberty that are both white with gold trim and I couldn't believe when I got the second one that the key's from the first safe fit the second one also. I don't know if this is common or just good luck. I also live in the south so when I bought my house that I'm living in and decieded to remodel some room's I made a hidden gun room that is a emergency shelter as well. Let the wind blow now .
Mine is a Mustang I think. It holds 30 long guns and weighs about 800 lbs.Insurance is also a must, regardless of whether family heirlooms are involved or not.One note.In 1981 all 16 of my guns were stolen(before the safe in '95)and I had insurance, but the policy was for only 2k in firearms coverage, unbeknownst to me. My whole collection of Marlin lever guns were gone and all the rest, including all the rifles and shotguns from my youth. What really hurt was the Colt,1902 Bisley.I still cry over that one,but all those serial numbers are always at the ready, like at this very moment, and I'm at work.I don't get on the computer at home.Anyway, the safe companies have clearance sales and discontinued safes that you can get pretty cheap, mine was $1800,five locking lugs, fire resistent, key and combination locks.
I got a gun cabinet, metal with locks, but no safe. In any event, the cabinet only holds 8 guns (though I've managed to squeeze 11 in) whereas my total collection, at last count, was 53. This means most guns are hidden throughout the house, most behind a fake wall.

Saxon, I HAVE to go to Ca. I'm PCSing, Marine orders dont ya know. Pendleton, down by San Diego. I think you're all on drugs, moving safes from here to there and then here and there, I dont think so. I'd like to have one, but that moving crap gets old real fast in the military. Just so you know, I need to have one, I know, but I also need to have just one, and that is going to cost more than any gun I own, in fact its going to cost more than my 3 most expensive ones, including the Leupold scopes, put together. If anyone knows of a safe that can hold 19 long guns(4 have scopes, and several have straight bolts), and 12 handguns, in a fashion that allows me to get them out without emptying out the safe to get at them, and for a price that wont be over 2500.00, fire resistant up to about 1500 degrees for at least 30 min., and doesnt weigh more than 1/2 a ton, please tell me.I've found a company that I'd like to buy from, but the weight and price are causing me heart failure, its Champion out of St. Louis.

Robsguns; So, yer comin' to San Diego, are ya? Well, welcome to Kalifornication! I've been in San Diego for the last ten years, sorry to see your Uncle Sammie asked you to visit us here in the occupied territories and you couldn't find a polite way to say "no".I have had a safe for years. First, I had a Sun Welding number, but it was small and wasn't fire resistant. A few years back I sprung for a Browning Platinum series, which weighs 900# and is fire-resistant to 1550 F for 30 minutes. If nothing else, I leave home with GREAT peace of mind, and also have a place to keep my birth certificate, social security card, records, cameras, lenses for same, and everything else of value to me. I understand your reluctance to move the monster yourself, believe me!! I have moved this beast twice, and I will never do so again. I would rather pay a pro than wrestle that much weight ever again. Realize, tho, that weight is a necessary evil in a gun safe. With the arrangement I've got, I am almost in the class of "If you can steal it, I will hold the door for you and salute you as you carry it out!" WEIGHT is the best theft deterrent there is.Other than that, give me a holler when you settle in. I would be happy to meet anyone form this BBS (well, maybe not Judge Dread, but only because I think he might suck out my brains). I would be happy to show you my safe and introduce you to the various local shooting ranges. Maybe we could go trapshooting sometime.
While I worked at the machine shop I built one out of half inch steel plate. 30 by 30. Only used good locks on it, nothing fancy. Decided it wasn't going to be big enough when I went to do the inside, so I went to plan "B". Walk in's safes are so much better. Plated a under staircase room for a guy out of quarter inch steel. Then he covered it with some sort of fire resistant board.Made a great place and the entry was neat.

I dont own a safe, but an aquaintance of mine builds them for a living. Theyre really nice the companies name is Sawmill Safe Co. I don't know if he has any info online though If memory seves me correctly they are about $600-700.00 for standard model 30 which is i think 30" widex24" deepx60" tall he paintsthem with automotive paint and lines them w/sheetrock and carpets them they are real nice looking very similar to commercial made brands he usually sells them at the local gun shows and the county fairs the first time I saw one in his shop I thought he was repairing a commercial safe thats how good they look Hank
250savage, Now you've stepped in it. I'll be gettin hold of you late in the year to take you up on your offer, you can bank on it.

Robsguns,Unfortunately, we live in a litigious society. Current laws are such that anyone that owns firearms really needs to do everything to protect themselves and others. If any of your firearms fall into the hands of a child or criminal and someone is hurt or killed....kiss your lifetime's assets goodbye. Here is a senario for you....you're sitting in a courtroom on the witness stand when the victims shark attorney asks why you didn't have a safe for your gun storage?....."it was inconvienent to move and too expensive"....(Victim's Lawyer: "your saying that you had enough money to acquire an arsenal and didn't have money to safely store these weapons of destruction from innocent children?...your Honor, I rest my case.")If you list all the reasons...pro and con...there is not much of an arguement for not having one. I bought mine 15 years ago, ran about $4000.....I have no regrets. Being on the road a great deal of the time it's peace of mind. Good Luck in your search for a safe...
When you walk into my house (and it is never locked), you just about trip over gun cases stacked against the wall towards the center of the room, guns in various stages of assembly, and plenty of ammo.
I get really tired of eating out, but since the kitchen table is covered with handguns and rifles I'm "working on" (playing around with), and there are never any clean dishes (I am always running Glocks through the dishwasher for the local P.D.), this is the only alternative.
Eventually she put her foot down, and I've cleared some of the rifles off the bed. I just pushed them over to my side, and they filled the space between the mattress and the floor. Good having a loaded rifle within reach.
I have a gun safe, but it is filled up with P.D. buy-outs, and I started stacking more around it. Somehow the two piles on either side met in the middle, and started it's own inexorable march towards the basement steps.
On up into the sunlit rooms, they really thrive and multiply without much feeding or maintenance. Since I am in eyesight of the P.D. station, the collection is safe.
I have a "whole house safe" much like a "whole house fan".
If you do get in base housing, you will want a way top secure your weapons. I served for 6 1/2 years until medically discharged. While stationed in Georgia I lived on base. One evening my son fell and cut his eyelid on the coffe table. In the chaos, my 6 year old daughter called 911 then hung up. Base police auto resppond to 911 hang-ups. So, we were pulling out to go to the hospital to see the cops rushing in. I said to my wife, "Wonder where they're goin?" We came home 3 hours later to see my commander and first shirt on the front lawn with a gang of MPs. They were "Astonished" at the number of firearms I owned that were unsecured. They took them all to the armory until I either bought a safe or trigger locks for all of them. None of them were loaded at the time either. I got a formal Letter Of Repremand for the incident. Still can't believe they freaked out over a couple of BB guns.
