243 ammo question

My wife has always used Winchester 100 grain power points in her 243. Got out today to shoot a bit and shot up my last 3 boxes. Went to get more (youth season opens Saturday) (And NO my wife is not under 16!!) and none of the gunshops or Wally World had any of that loading. Talked to a guy at the shop and he recommended the Winchester Supreme with the 95 grain ballistic silvertip bullet. How does this bullet perform? If my daughter does her job, can it take a whitetail effectively? I bought two boxes and it shoots well out of my Handi, so no problem there. Just never used it on game before and kind of leery until I know something for sure.

BT's area love/hate thing. I really like them. Good shot placement and they will be just fine.

They will perform just dandy , if you hit the vitals [;)]
    Shot placement is everything !!!
The Youth season just ended here in Pa. and the kids
dropped two nice doe ( 110 to 120 lb ) with one shot each [:)]
First dropped in her tracks and the second only went 5 or 10 yards .
Both shots where right behind the front shoulder .
Would like to know how you do , let us know
    and good luck

Those should work. You might check out the Remington Core-Lokt, 100gr soft points.

I don't use the 243, but I don't like the changes at Olin/Winchester, regarding the use of Nosler bullets as replacements for several of the PowerPoint and old style SilverTip bullets, in additon to dropping the 16 ga XX wads.

Short answer:95 gr. .243 is perfect for small whitetails.

Long answer: Everything that I like about the .243( low recoil, flat shooting, very accurate) I like at about 70 to 80 grains. I think it picks up where the 22-250 leaves off and fills the small gap before I go to the .270 win. A lot of people consider deer to be large game because they can grow to over 400lbs. I dont really consider 243 a caliber for large game, more like small-medium. Whitetails dont really count as large game, more like medium because they are on the small side and usually do not run more than 200, even thought they can be over 400lbs. Small Whitetails will certainly fall to 95 or 100 grain bullets when placed in vitals. When I want to go to more than 100 grains, I jump up to the .270.

i bought two boxes of those for my wife's .243 handi rifle. the gun hated them. they were all over the place. but, i know of two 230 lb bucks that were taken with them last year. they did real good and did not ruin the meat. I agree with "shot placement...etc..."

That would make a perfect whitetail round...your daughter should do just fine with those.

I have used the 95 grain BT on antelope and coyote. At 300+ yards there were quarter size exit holes on both. I haven't shot anything less than 250 yards but I think they might expand too quick except on full broadside shots. Hitting the shoulder on a big buck might not be so good.

i just went digging through the closet to grab a box to see what it was exactly that i use, and beeramid nailed the ammo i use. it's about the only thing i ever use for white tails and i've never seen one go more than 20 yards after being hit at about 75 yards.

I shoot a Ruger M77 in 6mm Rem. (pretty close to a .243, slightly faster) and I have found that most 90-100 grain spitzer's work well on deer and antelope. Should be a much better variety of factory .243 than 6mm, but handloading is still the best way to make the .244" cartridges shine
