Vacuum sealers

buddy just bought a B&D from Kmart and swears by it. He has processed maybe 100 qts of peas and does not have to blanch them, just put in bags and seal.
My question: checking ebay to find a good deal I see a lot of "tilia" offered. Are they as good as B&D or not. Most of these are offered with no accessories or instuctions. Are they worth the risk?? One offers a real good price but wants $20 handling?? What a rip off.

Anyway, original question: If you have one do you like it and what brand do you have/reommend. Thanks, Tom

Thinking about getting one. Are they pretty good at making food last? Anyone mind giving me a link to a good one? I don't see the difference in one to the other to be honest except how big a bag they can seal.

Yes they are, as long as you get a good one. The Foodsaver brand is very good, but the bas are high unless you can find a local discount house that carries them.

We liked ours enough to upgrade.

I have a foodsaver. Pretty old now.
We have used it for storing everything.
    They work.
Reuse the bags by washing them.
Check out QVC or HSN for deals
I believe we bought ours at Sam's Club.

I got the Foodsaver Pro model about 9 years ago, and every month or so; they send email specials on the bags & upgrades.
I've used mine HEAVILY during the time I've had it, and other than replacing the bags and cleaning the vacuum spigot thingy; no problems!
I have a slab of Oryx from 2 years ago that I cut chunks off for stew every now & then that still tastes fresh as the day I shot it. The salmon I snagged last year are firm and yummy when I thaw 'em out, and there's a bag of homemade brats from a friend in Wisconsin frozen in their own beer bath that I'm opening 4July!
The only drawbacks are freezer space (have 3 now!), and that the bags are somewhat fragile once they're frozen, and will tear or puncture with rough handling.

    I have the Foodsaver .
Really nice to buy whole salmon or whole pork loins and cut your own.
    Real money saver.
Just as important as my coffee pot .

I bought a Rival - Seal a Meal system two yrs ago and used it to vac seal about 1/3 of my comic book collection and they've held up.
I ran out of bags and haven't bothered to get more.
I even used it on bulk meats for the freezer w/no problems.

    Kodiakk,
Unless you plan on using the vaccum sealer every day, all day long, a cheaper version will do you fine. No need to order one from Cabela's.

Buy your bags in bulk, uncut, to save the most money.

Yes, food lasts MUCH longer when you remove the air. I have NOT had a problem with freezer burn with the bags. They also work well when buying bulk dry foods, and packing them off in sigle use portions.

There are more uses for the vaccum sealer than just kitchen things. [;)]

+1!!! I have a lot of ammo sealed with silica gel packs.

The ammo is why I'm actually interested in buying one to be honest. My wife wants one as well so it makes it all the easier. [:D]

Thanks for the comments folks I'm going to start looking around at the food savers.

FWIW...That communist store (Wal-Mart) carries the bags in their Sam's Choice brand MUCH cheaper than the name brand bags. We have been using them for the last couple of years with no problem.
