Why is the Sony Bravia so grainy?

Got me a free 46" flat screen (Sony Bravia). Kind a grainy/fuzzy like the playboys of the '80's and older. Dude did tell me to step back a bit to get a better picture. Kind a wish it had the old Wega like resolution (the tv it replaced).

So how far am I supposed to put the tv so the silly thing don't look so grainy?

Watched "Bladerunner" and it was pretty cool since I didn't see it at the movies. Other than Pan Am ad the movie holds up. Not like "Alien" where their space ship was 9 million dollars [:D].

Also watched "Boondock Saints" and the passed out stripper scene the boobs did fill out the screen (like Troy said in the commentaires). Again wished I seen that at the movies (40 foot boobs) [:D].

I got a spare bedroom and (I don't get many visitors) so I'm thinking of making that in to a home theatre. One small-ish window I can black out. No not with aluminum foil (even though that's the best window treatment to cut light) and yes I done did that before.

Also any advice I should think/do about before the "conversion"? It is a condo and no I don't like my neighbors [:D].

You're asking us about TVs? What's next, cameras?[:D]

We have a 46" Bravia and the picture is grainy if stand right on top of it. We sit 10 feet away, center of screen at eye level and the picture is perfect.

No, that doesn't sound right; you should have a sharp picture if you are > 6' from the screen. There's nothing wrong with the Bravia.

You haven't given us enough information to diagnose your problem.

When you turn the set on, what's the resolution displayed? Hopefully, 1080i/HD.

    Are your connections HDMI?

What is your source? If you are using a DVD player, & it's not an HD model, your picture will be grainy. Or, if the DVD itself is not HD, same thing.

If you try to feed an HD tv from a non-HD source the picture will look grainy. We have a 58" Samsung that we originally fed a non-HD signal and we were very disappointed with the picture. When we upgraded to the HD satellite receiver the picture became incredible.

Helped to set up a 47" 3D-HD TV. Minimum distance for viewing on that size is 7 feet. But there are so many connection options, how you connect to it and the video source you feed it all make a big difference.

scrumpyjack - Just because my people made it don't make me an expert [:D].

Sounds like 6 - 10 feet is the sweet spot. I'm also happy that unlike my LCD the Bravia don't have a dark spot from bad angles. I'll have to keep an eye out for the resolution displayed when I turn it on. No HDMI cable just the three RCA Jack looking cables. And still on regular DVD player that won't die so I can get a Blue Ray. I guess I'll just have to wait to be blown away after I get the Blue Ray and the HDMI cable.

After playing around with the "Custom" settings the tv looks better. The Freeze frame image is still a bit wonky.

So Bravia's pretty good huh? I remember Sarah Brightman was pitching it a while back and she did look real good. That reminds me I think I'll have to see if I can download a owner's manual.

Bleen the flat screen. I wanna see 40' boobs. Missile tits preferably, but droopy funbags won't be frowned on.

She got a good dusting off laying down in the back of the pick 'em up truck on the way to my place. I did notice movies shot on film is much more grainy. I was thinking "Matrix" would be kick * on it but not so much. The TV looks better with less surounding lights.

Also I've been looking for DVDs with color test pattern to adjust the color setting of the TV. I know I saw them on the DVDs but can't remeber which one had it. I think it was a disaster movie where the tv station goes off the air. So if any of yalls remember seeing a color bar on a DVD let me know.

The only user adjustment for color is the PICTURE mode, which allows you to select VIVID, STANDARD, CINEMA, VIDEO, or TEXT. A color test disk is worthless without the equipment & knowledge that a professional installer has.

I don't need the professional disc. Just that color bars where you can adjust the silly settings yourself.

I wonder how I set my last TV? Did I wait until some tv station went off? I'm kind a sure it was on a movie disc but who knows?

As for the picture mode I chose "Custom" and started to play with that setting. Vivid was close but the colors that threw out was like an acid trip. The rest was kind a dull.

I think I'll just have to tweek it a bit but so far I think I'm getting close.

That's your problem right there. Feeding an HD TV an analog signal is always going to look like crap. Pick up a Sony Streaming Blue Ray player, (around a $100)It will do LOTS more than just play disks. You can stream movies from Netflix, Hulu and lots of other services even you tube. If the TV supports 4k, I would suggest getting a 4k player. If you get a Sony player, it will "talk" to the TV and offer more functionality.

You are giving the TV 525 lines of picture signal but it wants to display 1080 or more. Actually those 525 lines are interlaced so really you only have 262. Just google Bravia Manual and the model. Sony is very good about posting manuals online.

Found a DVD with color test thing. On a porn disc of all things [:D]. Gotta love porn discs from the '90's (it was on "Red Vibe Diary" that Stacy Vallentine [:p]). It made me wonder if they put that test pattern there to test folks eyes if they gone blind [:D]?

I wonder how much the HDMI cable will improve the image? I guess I'll find out this week when I go and get the silly thing. Now what movie should I use to do the "Pepsi Challenge?". And no I don't have "Avitar" I figure "Transformers" will be close enough.

Got the HDMI cable. That made a world of difference. Spent a few extra bucks and got the Monster brand cable. I was watching season 8 of "House" and the cable did improve the view. But when I popped in one of those BBC "Planet Earth" DVD in (this one was "Blue Ocean" or something like that) and HOLY CRAP [:0][:0][:0]... I gots to get more of those nature shows.

I reckon this will make me turn that spare bedroom in to a home theatre right quick. Closet doors be damned they're going and as soon as Home Depot or OSH gets the wire racks in that closet will be gutted. I need to start boxing up all the crap in thre so I can work in that space. Really could use a thrid room to shift the junk.
