Open-top revolvers...

Please teach me a little about them! [:)]

I have always wanted a blued or matte stainless open-topped revolver with maybe a small amount of engraving. Now, they are obviously fairly abundant in the black powder market and can be had for a fairly reasonable price. What are some good models to consider? What models are able to be converted to shoot cowboy loaded ammunition? What companies make them to shoot cartridges right from the box?

ADDED: The caliber is not a must, but something like a .38, .44 special with at least a 5.5" barrel. 7.5" would be ideal though.

i have probably owned at least a dozen of different calibers, all i can say on the issue is there is a good reason they stopped making them

No need to convert anything--Cimarron did it for you. They carry the replica Colt Open Tops in .38 Special, .44 Colt, .44 Russian, .45 Schofield and .45 Colt depending on model. Just click on the link to Cimarron and scroll to handguns--look under Conversions and under Open Tops. Uberti also has them(they make guns for Cimarron too--Cimarron sometimes just does some polishing etc to them.

You can of course just buy the cylinders to convert a 1851 Colt Navy and 1860 Colt Army and 1858 Remington replica's but they are half as expensive as buying the gun already done from Uberti

Webley made some. Most are uncommon in the states, but they are available if you want something a little special.

Seen them in "Boondock Saint's: All Saint's Day" last night.

The Uberti/Cimarron are easiest to get in to with "modern" metalurgy. Also being able to shoot .45LC or .45Schofield is a nice bonus. Now if they made a full lug (making them look like "Trigun") would be nice but in stainless.
