I just got a fly rod outfit for a gift.
Can anyone recommend any books or other means to teach me how?
I am in the central plains and will probably be using it on lakes and ponds for crappie, bluegill, bass, etc.

Yep I do. I tried when I was young but didn't know any of the techniques required. To me tying flies is easy, casting flies is easy, but what to do when they land on or in the water just be-daffles me. I'm conditioned to applying motion and direction and depth control to whatever bait/lure I'm using. I took a fly-tying course two years in a row along with my youngest son. The instructors were great. One earned his masters degree in freshwater invertebrate biology. One thing I haven't been able to do is tie the dozens and dozens of the same fly that you see in every fly-fisherman's fly box. Most of what we learned can be seen online. Every year I tell myself I'm going to leave the spinning rod home and take the fly rod out, but i never do.

There's probably sportsman groups in anyone's area sponsoring fly tying classes. The Izaak Walton League did the one here. Just remember when casting, you can't cast forward until the line rolls out flat behind you. Then you can put forward force on it. Fly fishing can be a bit pricey. You can spend as much as you want. Even the line can be anywhere from $80 to $150. Those that do it are usually a bit snobby too.

I have been for years but exclusively trolling
for put and take trout ,they'll bite
on any ole hook with feathers and some tinsel.
I never took classes and it shows.
    I only tie streamers.

I used to buy them from the store at Folsom Prison years ago.

The convicts sell them for cigarette money. Guys with nothing but time on their hands can tie some really nice dry flies!

My dads friend, Jerry, teaches fly tying. He is awesome at it. It looks really hard. I never tried it, but use them to trout fish in PA. It looks like a real art to tie them. Oakie

I never knew people held patents on "flies"!!!
    Maybe his DVD would help.......

Tied commercially for a lure maker when I was in HS. Have not tied in years, and have no room or time for another hobby. It is fun and challenging to get them perfect.

I do and while helping a friend clear ut his pop's joint I got bunch of tying material. From a quick peek and calling "dibs" I recall a full strap of Golden Phesant. I should be going through it later this month.
