I work in the fire marshal's office. All of the warnings we get are "attributed" to a source; e.g., NFPA, NIST, UL, etc. Never heard of this "hazard".

    The BS flag is appropriate.

Hey, I saw the guy on "Dual Survival" start a fire with a clear plastic bag full of urine. Another of the "survivalist" shows had the guys start a fire with a chunk of ice formed into a lens by swirling it between his palms.
We see numerous right of way fires that began "from all appearances" with a glass bottle forming the lens.

In High school I started fires with broken pieces of clear bottles.

In a test conducted by Oklahoma's Midwest City Fire Department, sunlight magnified by a water bottle reached 250 degrees,

If I am not mistaken most things require a hotter temp to ignite.

Probably more concern regarding the leeching of chemicals into the water.

I worked with an old engineer that told me he had an old Studebaker that leaked coolant when he was in college in the 40s.He carried a gallon glass jug of water in the back seat to keep the radiator topped off.He got in the car after class and the back seat had a big burned place on it and the jug of water was broken. His theory was the water jug act like a magnifying glass with the suns rays and ignited the back seat. The heat from the fire broke the glass jug and put the fire out.

Friend of mine left a full bottle of Jack Daniels on the passenger seat of his truck. When he came back the door glass was broken and the bottle of whisky gone. You have been warned.

What a load of horse hockey.
Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

the concept of a bottle of water being able to start a fire like a magnifying glass is plausible, but if you have ever done it you would know there is a focus point that has to be maintained to do it

to do this with a bottle of water is extremely difficult to do on purpose, you have to have a specific amount of water in the bottle depending on the design of the bottle, smooth walled would be best, and you have to raise the bottle to find its focus point

and heat inside the car or the bottle has nothing to do with it

Correct. The ocean is becoming warmer because all the throw away plastic bottles floating in the water.

Why is this guy smoking ? He's trying to die before the ocean does.
