Carrying gun to Georgia Question-Visiting Military

I am planning to visit my son on Graduation Day at Fort Benning, Georgia when he leaves Basic Training.

As I am in Texas and carry a pistol when traveling, how do I handle the issue.
We will have a hotel, but I don't like to leave it there.

We will be going to the base where graduation will be.

How do I handle having a weapon?

I'm assuming I can't take it to the base.

Ask if the hotel has a safe--most large hotels do---unless you are staying at Motel 6. Otherwise you you'll have to leave it locked up in the trunk. I highly doubt you can take your weapon on base even with a permit. Maybe you could contact a local gun shop and see if they would be willing to hold it for you for a few hours if you buy a box or two of shells for his trouble.

    Thanks Ruger!

I was thinking hotel safe, but I like the gunshop idea much better.

And, I might find something I like!

Do not try to take the gun on base!

You may get by security just fine but you are subject to search when you go on base and firearms are prohibited unless registered with the provost-marshel. And for a one time trip like yours registering it will be more of a hastle than it is worth (takes a couple hours) and unless you are carrying a military ID of some type I doubt you can even register it.

I never asked Fort Benning if they had a storage locker for firearms.

Benning is a kinda wide open base.

Maybe David Nunn has an answer. I just left it locked in a safe place.

I did the same thing at Fort Lewis.

Even when I was working the military didn't like law enforcement to carry on their base. Even if we were there at their request.

If you just want to be legal about it, you could contact the Directorate of Public Safety, Building 215, Phone: 706/545-1133 and ask them if they have a procedure to check a firearm into the armory during your visit.

I doubt if they are going to be thrilled about it since they are going to be as busy as a one armed paper hanger on graduation day. Anything which adds to the workload isn't going to make them happy.

I liked the Army a lot better before everybody went nuts about firearms. The last time I overnighted at an Army instillation was in the 1970s. The Barracks/BOQ regulations posted on the door said all firearms in the room had to be unloaded.
