Battle of the birds

I've got a blue bird house in my backyard. Last year the blue birds and the swallows battled over it. The swallows came out on top but lost in the end as a raccoon got the house open and ate all the occupants (evil little snits). I've since put a lock on the house. Anywhoo....this year the blue birds and the swallows battled it out just like last year early spring (fun as hell to watch too). So I just got back from a busness trip to Fontana, California and what do I see....a sparrow has entered the battle for the house. It looks as if the little bugger has won the war for now as he/she is stuffing the box with nest fixin's. He/she is a hell raiser too as he/she likes to sit with it's head poked out the hole raising all kinds of comotion. The sparrow seems the be battled hardened as well beacuse when ever the blue birds or swallos show up the little fella dive boms them and runs them off. Great fun to watch (I know...I alreday said that). Ahhhhh....nature![:D][8D]

I watched a mocking bird dive bomb a red-tailed hawk the other day for about 10 minutes during lunch. [:D] You and I find the same type of stuff entertaining. [:D]

When I moved here there was a bird nest on my front porch which the sparrows reused every year. Several years ago I had all the wood covered with vinyl, so the little strip of molding which supported their nest wasn't there anymore. Come nesting time I noticed a couple of sparrows raising hell on the porch, and I figured when they saw they couldn't build there, that would be the end of it. A few days later, when I turned on the front porch light, I saw a nest on top of the light with four eggs in it. I showed it to the wife and thought she would never stop laughing. That didn't seem like a very good arrangement to me, so I built a bird house and put it up where their nest used to be. They abandoned the nest on the light and moved into the bird house. Everybody seemed to be happy with the new place. I got the bright idea of building a birdhouse with a glass side so we could watch what was going on. I built the glass birdhouse and put it up next to the other birdhouse. The very first thing they did was pile up straw against the glass so we couldn't see in. My wife says they "put up curtains". Both houses have been occupied ever since. No telling how many sparrows have been raised on my front porch.

Judging from what I've seen around here, if you put up a second house, you'll have twice as much commotion. [:D]
