...This has come to mind, several times lately.
The enviro freaks crap their pants because of an oil spill that is 1 acre! The regulations, laws,...and money, to us over the last
few decades...has to be enormous.

During WWI, and WWII...HOW MANY ships were sank?...HOW MANY MILLIONS of gallons of fuel oil were spilled? Aviation fuel? Diesel?...on board and transport, etc., , what are all called "pollutants" and will "destroy the enviroment"...etc.,...and the oceans keep working.
Boy, w-a-y to much "self worth" and "importance" these people have, IMO...[;)]

...and no, I don't change oil in the yard,...kills the grass...[}:)][:D]

A merchant/war vessel sinking in the middle of the atlantic cannot be at all compared to say, an oil supertanker running aground in a bay. Its not so much that oil gets spilled, its where it's spilled that causes an outcry. The middle of the ocean is a rough place where oil slicks get pulverized and dissipated rather quickly - inland seas, bays, rivers, etc. are much more susceptible to oil spills because the oil has nowhere to go but the shore and its inhabitants.

The effects of a spill can depend on a number of factors such as surface tension, specific gravity of the hydrocarbons as well as their viscocity. Lighter hydrocarbons will evaporate while the heavier components may oxydize or emulsify (which can really hamper a cleanup). Out in deep water far removed from any coastlines a crude oil spill has little impact on the enviroment. Close to shore or in an inland waterway it can spell disaster! WWII and the 1950's has left us with a legacy of cleanups leftover from the "Greatest Generation".

The beaches of the East coast of the United States were oily into the late 1950's or early 1960's from WWII and other spillage/dumping after the war. I don't recall any major cleanup of the beaches, and it took a while, but it's all pretty much gone now. Left to herself, Mother Earth will clean herself. There is some fairly nice looking country in Alabama and West Virginia where unreclaimed strip mines used to be. In the old days, raw sewage was flushed into the sea. But then, in those days we had biodegradable turds.
The road to hell is paved with COMPROMISE.
