So, if you knew what kind of car you wanted

What would be the cheapest way to get one. I know what I want, even got two choices on color.

How would you do it? Is there a place I could just place an order on the interweb??

    New or used

Navy Federal and USAA offer new or used and supposedly even offer discounts at CarMax.

When I bought my vette I wrote an email to the internet sales manager of 10 dealerships. I stated the car I wanted with the specific details and options and told them that I'm also asking 9 other dealers for a quote and will buy from the one with the lowest out-the-door quote. Got it out the door for less than $50K with the Z51 package.

When I bought the TAHOE, after we made the deal and done the paperwork, I was on the phone with USAA to change the insurance. The dealer heard I was a member of USAA and gave me another $100.00 off the bottom line just for being a member.

I should have financed it through USAA and maybe got a little more.

Check with your bank or credit union to see what kind of deal they have with the dealers you're talking to.

If you bought total loss coverage on the loan (GAP), that would be free through USAA too if you had financed it with them. The last GAP I bought on my Tahoe was $800.

The best way to buy a new car is not to have a trade, that way it is one transaction and they don't have the opportunity to hose you on both ends. The next thing is to choose the end of the month, a Saturday morning when it is pouring rain. If you're the only one in the showroom because its crappy weather, they're going to make a better deal to move a vehicle. I have experienced this first hand, and it worked.

This is what I was thinking about doing, e-mail all the Ford dealers around and see what would their best out the door price be. [:)]

Try to buy on the last day of the month....They do not want the floor plan to run over.. My very best buys were on or between 12-26 and 12-31 (end of year)...I bought a new Mustang, list 36500.00 for 26,800. A new F150 list 34,500.00 for 26,800.00

This works, but no matter what you're still going to have to endure the 'extended warranty' pressure discussion, and they'll put the really big guns on you for that discussion. Get a good deal and dealers are relentless with this discussion! They'll put you in the box, try to waste your time, delay you, tag-team you, say they're waiting for paperwork (you name it) all in the name of trying to sweat you out.

This is big money for the dealerships anymore.

Last car I bought, I told them if they even bring it up, I will walk away [:D] They did not, bring it up [:D]

I went to the Toyota site and built the Tundra I wanted, down to color and step bars. The site then let me send my specs to three dealers for quotes (I was getting some pricing help from my bud Sav99, who is in the business). One dealer in town said there was no such truck within 600 miles, but he had a swell red one with different options for me. Another place in Santa Fe said they wanted to work with me, how much did I want to spend? The place in Gallup (140 miles) said, "We have that truck here for you, here are the specs and here is our price." Within $100 of my target price. I went out and drove it and gave them a deposit.

I would purchase it in Florida. I've learned that cars are several hundred to thousands cheaper in Florida than in the Memphis area. Dealers in Memphis purchase low mileage, late model cars in Florida for local resale.

for awhile it was the in thing for texans to buy in montana because trucks were cheaper and no sales tax. The dealer would even mail your plates back to tx.

I'm on car #3, with funding by my credit union. They make car buying easy, also saved me $$$ on two of them. Talked to salesman, and got his "lowest price". Went to credit union, they get a little better pricing through fleet sales and saved me money. Also, got a lower finance rate through them as well. I have never been run through the grinder, when buying a car using them. Has always, been a very easy simple process. Just me 2.5 cents

That don't work anymore. I've done the same. Now they'll take you to the 'finance office' (like you're going to finally complete your paperwork and get the hell out. The finance dude will tell you he/she is getting the papers in order. Then they'll say something like..."Now I know you've said you absolutely do NOT want an extended warranty, so I'd like to take this time to review the items covered under your new vehicle's warranty" Oh, you'll object; "Don't go there!!!" you'll say. They'll swear they're not, but eventually they'll slide into the extended warranty discussion.
That's the point where I get up and walk out. On the way out I tell the owner or manager why he lost the sale. At that point nothing will get the sale back.

I've done it a few times.
