I suspect a virus

I suspect I have a virus that appears to be connected to GunBroker.

When I open GunBroker Forums another webpage takes over and tells me I need to update my software. That's about all the information it gives me. It doesn't say who the update is from or what it's updating. It gives me an OK option and has the little close X that should close the page. It can't be closed. The only way out of it is to restart the computer. After the restart I can open GunBroker. The only webpage this has happened on so far is GunBroker.

Anybody else seen anything like this?

If you hit it, you'll have a virus. It's like a cop or a vampire, you have to invite it in for it to do damage.

Depending on the site, I won't even hit the red X, I'll just go to Task Manager and dump IExplore.exe and kill the whole screen.

James, if you don't already have it, down load the free version here -

    https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/

Close all windows and run the free version.

I had the same thing happen this morning, you just have to close the opened tabs. I have had something similar happen on Facebook.

I downloaded and ran the free Malwarebytes Anti-Maleware. It says I'm clean. My antivirus is Trend Micro. When I opened GunBroker the opensoftwareupdater came up. This might be one for the computer shop.

I was getting the same thing a few weeks back, James.

After installing malwarebytes, running it and restarting the internet machine, the problem stopped.

This just happened to me about five minutes ago when I got on GB. I was on another site and had no problems. I didn't open it and just closed my computer and restarted it. I knew it was something bad.

That is a particularly aggressive ad that some dirt bags slipped into the network. AdOps is working on removing it right now.

That type of Malware is often called Hostageware since it demands payment to clean up the problem it created. Very nasty.

    I didn't get it.
    And I didn't open it.
And I hope it would be caught by my current defenses.

But if I did click on it, how would I get rid of it?

When I finally meet face to face and toe to toe with one of these virus nerds I intend to beat every pimple off his big ugly head. Then I'm going to jerk a knot in his *. Then I intend to knock a knot on his head and before it has a chance to rise I'm going to beat it back flat.

AND ANOTHER THING. When I take over I'm going to install spikes in all the parking lot lines. I eventually plan to install spikes in the centerline and lane dividers in highways, but I haven't figured out how to change lanes yet.

Yet another reason to run Firefox and Ad block. Yes, you don't help pay for sites, but you don't get crap like this either!

I don't know if this is the same thing, but when I log onto GBGD, I get a pop up from AVG saying I need to update.
I never click on any 2nd party notice to up date. I go to the source.

My AVG - AV updates automatically ... sure enough everything was up to date.

I talked to the boy at the Solutions Store yesterday. I asked him how much he would charge me to get rid of it. He said $75.00. I asked him how much he would charge me to fix it if I try to do it myself and dork it up so bad you can't tell it used to be a computer. He said $75.00.

I had about decided to give it a shot myself this weekend, but this afternoon it appears to be gone. I don't know for how long though. Until I find out what happened I'll assume some of CaptFun's boys fixed it.

It cost me $75.00 the last time it happened to me, so I had the fellow who fixed it for me install the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Premium) for me...I really like it.

Sort of. I don't think it was ever in my computer. I think it was embedded in one of the ADs on GunBroker, and laying in wait for me and some others by name to open the Forums.

Evidently CaptFun's computer guys found and removed it. The problem has gone away.
