.....with a Digital Camera! [:D] He Dog, you've made me see the error of my ways and I feel all reformed now! [8D]

I was walking across our yard headed for a little pond to see what wildlife might be down there this evening when I saw a head sticking up out of our lawn. I went down to investigate and found this guy. I think it is a Box Turtle. Mrs. Old-Colts got a piece of tomato (non-poisonous) and tried to feed it, but it wasn't interested. After I took some pictures we backed away about 6 feet, it came out of its shell, and ambled off at a mindboggling pace and eased into the woods.

I feel all warm and fuzzy inside now! [}:)][;)]

Only 62? Heck we are going to have to start calling you Young Colt. Or maybe Colt Boy like the Waltons. Sorry I can't see the photo, I will check it later.

remingtonoaks said "turtle soup.... you don't know what you've missed"

The "National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American reptiles and Ammphibians says two statements on page 469.

    1. They (box turtles) are fond of slugs, earthworms, wild strawberries and mushrooms poisonous to man-which habit has killed many a human who has eaten their flesh.

    then goes on to say

    2. New York Indians are responsible for eliminating this turtle from much of the area between Ohio and New England; they ate Box Turtle meat.............

I would stay with the snapper turtle and Diamondback terripin meat and let the box turtle meat go to the New York Clinton's fundraiser dinner.

There he is, a male three toed box turtle (Terrapene carolina triunguis). Interesting color morph, they are similar but even brighter with lots of orange, white and brown in Eastern Oklahoma. I can sure see the genetic affinities. I love his painted mouth.

I watched a snapping turtle RUN across my yard the other day. I had washed the car and wanted to put it back in the barn when I saw this turtle moving off to the left. I thought to myself....dang-it now I have to wait on this turtle, but it was off like a flash and zipped faster than I could have across the yard.

It was an icky snapping turtle and not anywhere near as cute as yours though.

When I was a kid, last year (lol), I had one as a pet. It loved grasshoppers, watermellon, and cantalope. What a wonderful summer that was. He finally ambled off for the winter, probably found a woman to cuddle with.
