Who believes that it is time that all politions take a 50% pay cut go on HMOS like the rest of us, turn in their taxpayer payed for transportation. Free gas cards to pay for the gas they burn. And cut their pensions by 75% How much would this save the U.S. and the tax payers. I say enough of this <1FMJ>

I can back cutting their pay and benefits...no reason to get a lifetime pension from a 2 year or 6 year stint in any job either...

Salaries for Senators and Congressmen should be set and paid by the states/counties they represent. Any increase would have to be approved by the voters in their home state or county.

They are "supposed" to represent us----then why not get paid by us.

Their pay and benefits is chicken feed compared to what they steal. What do you think all those 10s of thousands lobbys, all with big bucks, do with all that money? Did you think all those many billions was just for the Christmas party?

I believe you are on the right track here. After cutting the Pols pay we need to get rid of tenure, do away with the unions, and quit sending our money overseas!!![:(!][:(!][:(!]

    Great Idea!!!![^]

Now all you have to do is find a politician to sponsor this bit of legislation. Good luck with that. [:D]
It's being willing. I found out early that most men, regardless of cause or need, aren't willing. They blink an eye or draw a breath before they pull the trigger. I won't. ~ J.B. Books

If you go back to the original government representatives(congress) you'll probably find that most of them lost money by serving. They left their businesses, farms, and homesteads to go to the capital for their terms knowing the sacrifice was ultimately worthwhile. The career politician is a mutant of the original intent to have citizens serving as legislators for a term or two and then returning to their home and life.

A lot of these guys werevalready well connected before they took office. In principle I agree we need to bring them down to earth but in reality the savings wouldn't amount to very much. They still make the rule that would favor them. That is their true earnings potential, not their pay and benefits.

politicians need to live like the majority of us do with the same type retirements and benefits

but unions are not all bad just some are because they are made up of sorry people

moral decay of a society is the main problem with the world

I have the same problem, which is weird. I think it's a failure in our schools to properly educate children on the various political / economic theories.

If a kid grows up Conservative, he tends to think everything he dislikes is Socialism / Communism. He's wrong about 99% of the time, but that's how it plays out.

If a kid grows up Liberal, he tends to think everything he dislikes is Fascism / Nazism. He's wrong about 99% of the time, but that's how it plays out.

Lately the bloviators on both sides have been trying to blur this distinction and toss a monkey wrench into an already gummed situation. Dirty Rat Bastid Bloviators!!!

    But I digress ...

As for the original post here, a good idea, I like it. Not the root cause of our elected officials failure to be responsive to us, but still some sweet payback and "pulling them back down to Earth" potential there.

    Won't help though, not really.

If we really wanted to fix this country we wouldn't be talking party against party and ideology against ideology. We'd be talking about how the political system in this country works, what it runs on.

Money, influence, special interests and lobbying. The Right of the People to Petition Their Government for Redress of Grievances has been usurped by a vast industry of competing and well funded interest groups. Corporations, associations, the individually wealthy.

These people and corporations buy access, write laws and keep the public's voice small by keeping their own very large. They created feedback loops where politicians need to appease them to get campaign funding (direct and indirect), industry jobs when out of office, an endless list of perks to stroke the ego.

You want to see America's government become responsive you are going to have to fight to outlaw paid professional lobbying. You are going to have make an entire $Billion$ Dollar industry vanish, put at least a 100,000 Americans instantly out of work.

And you are going to have to let go of paying for your pet causes to be promoted in Congress by professionals, lawyers and other manipulators of the system.

Otherwise, cut all those salaries or bring about term limits if you like and it won't amount to a ice cube's worth of difference at cooling the flames of Hell itself.

Technically, they don't vote themselves pay raises anymore (too much bad press, I supposed)

They simply created a bill that gives them AUTOMATIC pay raises every year, unless they vote to refuse it.
