Good book by Clancy. Anyone else read it? I'm on round 2.

Who's read it? I've read it once already, but I'm re-reading it. I think it's quite possibly one of the best military fiction books ever written.

I read it several times years ago.

An excellent read, very well thought out and woven together.

I read it when it first came out. It's very good but if you want a better one try:

The Third World War, August 1985 / by John Hackett and other top-ranking NATO generals and advisors.

This IS the best ever written about NATO and the Warsaw Pact.

About RSR, the only thing I couldn't buy is I don't care how good Robbie is or what helo he's in, he could not single handedly destroy a Soviet fleet without getting his rotor blistered.

Clancy is awesome, hands down my favorite, especially The Bear and the Dragon. Russia, discovers oild and gold in siberia, china attempts to invade and take it, we back russia up and push those commie meanies all the way back into china.

I like that one as well. I have all of his Jack Ryan books in hardback, except The Hunt for Red October. Having a hard time finding it. Read some of Larry Bonds' books as well, he has a couple very good reads.

The reason you are having a hard time is that everyone refused to publish him except the Naval Institute Press. I have my original first edition that I read while subhunting in the North Pacific.
They're on eBay sometimes, but pricy.

I go the audio route. Cassettes you say? UGH!

Well, not really. If you can get (via Amazon, etc) the unabridged versions by Brilliance, Inc. they're good. I have found that over the years I have/have had a learning disability, where the written word doesn't sink in quite as absolutely as the spoken word. I'm better focused.

Perhaps that's why I was suitable as an air traffic controller? Who knows. I don't. Well I digress...

Audio books are sometimes verbatim narrative, and sometimes full productions with several actors role-playing the books scenario as it unfolds. They are quite entertaining. Imagine knocking-off a book while driving on a long trip? Neat, huh? Best, Joe

    EDIT:
...and wasn't the helo pilot Gerald O'malley? ("Jer-O", as Doug Perrin, RN, captain of the HMS Battleaxe called him in Red Storm Rising?)

My favorite Clancy book has to be Without Remorse. For those of you who haven't read it, it relates the background of Mr. Clark. I liked the part about how he disguised himself as a wino and used the 12 gauge bang-stick on the drug dealer.

I think Red Storm Rising is Clancy's best work. I read it around 1991. I liked that it didn't revolve around Jack Ryan, a totally original story.

There was also a submarine simulation computer game named after the novel in the late 1980s. It roughly followed the storyline in the book. I was addicted to that game on my Commodore 64.

I also liked Without Remorse, but I think the most under-rated Clancy novel is Cardinal of the Kremlin. The storyline revolving around the Mujahideen in Afghanistan has become very relevant to our world in recent years.

Red Storm Rising was required reading for us NROTC types in the early 80's.

What's new and current with Clancy?

One of my favorite all time books. I was so into it I didn't put it down (except to sleep)

I finished it in 2 1/2 days, believe it or not [;)]
