My Gregg Allman Story

After Cher ditched Gregg his career totally tanked and to get money to live on he was playing anywhere they would pay him to play. It would have been sometime in the 80s that Gregg played in a dive in Athens, Ohio. I heard on the radio when and where he was playing and that the cover charge was $5.

I was never real big on the Allman Brothers but $5 and I didn't have to drive very far, why not.

Gregg is standing on a 6" high stage, all alone, playing his keyboard and singing and no one is listening. Everyone is drinking and completely ignoring Gregg. No applause, no nothing. I walk up and stand in front of that little stage less than 5 feet from Gregg. I really listened to him sing and play and became a Gregg Allman fan. He was very good. He played with his eyes closed, off in his own world. It was obvious to me he loved performing so much he even loved playing with just one person watching, listening and applauding.

After about 2 hours he finished his show. At that point Gregg opened his eyes, looked me right in the eyes for at least 10 seconds, than mouthed "Thank you." Than he walked off towards the bathroom.

Because of the long direct eye contact and the mouthed "Thank you" that night so long ago in that dive bar ended up being on of the favorite performances I have ever been to and I've been to many a concert!!
