It is a damn glorified clothing store and nothing more. And not working man clothing. It is all women and yuppy man clothing.
Very small hunting section, no ammo. No help at the gun counter.
I have been in there twice and see no reason to ever return.

So they are asking ammo buyers if they are in the country legally?
Well, that's interesting and not a bad thing so much but I don't like the place. After THE BIG SCARE they yanked scary looking guns off the racks and claimed they did not sell such nasty stuff. Now that they realize they've missed a bunch of sales they bring them back out?!
Not acceptable behavior.
When they first opened near me I checked them out. No handguns, not a bad wall full of rifles and shotguns. Quite a wide ammo selection behind the counter. Prices were higher than most other places, unless there was a sale. I scored some .38 Special on sales, net price beating Walmart.
But that's it and since THE BIG SCARE, the only use I've had for them is their parking lot. Met a guy there to sell him my S&W 422 a while back.
It's in their name, <<<DICKS>>> 1FMJ
Yep: Aptly named
On Dick's itself, its a national chain sporting goods store. **OF COURSE** you're not going to get a gun counter run by someone really knowledgeable about hunting or guns, or ammo or such. While its not impossible, you just can't expect that. You'd bluntly be lucky enough to even find a person behind the counter who can tell you the features of the guns sitting right behind him on the rack.
Likewise, **OF COURSE** you're not going to get a counter full of interesting handguns, nor specialty rifles. That's not what the store is "about". Bluntly, I think you'd be lucky to find ANY handguns in a large chain store like this nowadays.
My personal take on Dicks is that its a perfectly fine place to buy ammo when on sale. Its probably an OK place to buy a low-end sporting type rifle or shotgun, assuming yours stocks these things (they don't all do so), and again, if on sale.
The store near me has decent selection of archery equipment, including sights, broadheads, serving line, 2 and 3d targets, etc. Not perfect, but far more than you're going to find anywhere except a specialized archery or hunting specialty store (and not everyone is lucky enough to have something like that around them). Their overall camping/hunting/fishing selection is OK. Again, not perfect, but FAR better than you're going to find at any Walmart or other similar store. They have a better selection of baseball gloves, soccer equipment, and other similar sporting type stuff than most.
Bottom line is its not a store for "hardcore" gunners or hunters, but its also not supposed to be. If you just need common stuff, its fine.
The problem is what. . .that Dicks is now following Federal law in selling ammo? You're buying ammo on your credit card (which provides them with your name and address), but you care if you have to check a box indicating that you're in the country legally?

well said. And I dont need fred bear or world renown gunsmith available to pick out a box of ammo or a package of deer scent either. And I dont need that or want to pay 20% more for basic items either.
our Dicks has a sizeable ammo counter (Not Academy sized, but Dicks is right up the street and Academy is 25 miles away. Cabelas wont open till this fall and BassPro on this side of town next spring) But their people are dicks and have very little gun knowledge. I went over there to see if they had a certain O/U I was looking at on GunBroker and just wanted to feel it and see the quality before buying it. Spent 20 minutes trying to even find someone in the gun section. Finally left & went back to the office and bid on my shotgun...
I have a Cabella's But still their counter people do not have a clue either. If I know what I want and its not at one of my small home town stores, then I just shop on GunBroker. Its just easier than wasting my time and increased blood pressure.
