...there seem to be more right handed people than left handed people?

Good question, considering when we were infants and toddlers, we used both hands equally well. Observe a very young child playing, coloring, or eating, and you'll see what I mean. Hand-dominance usually doesn't develop until the age of 3 or 4.
Personally, I think it's a matter of conformity. It's a right-handed world. A child with right handed-parents is taught to put the pencil in your right hand, and that the right hand is the one many cultures recognizes as the proper one for greetings, and religious rituals, such as blessing oneself.
Perhaps lefty's are just naturally rebellious.

I can't help but figure that the dominant eye may play a roll also.

I've seen a shirt that says:

Everyone was born Left Handed, they turn right handed when they commit their first sin.

I don't know, some countries drive on the "other" side.

Eye dominance has nothing to do with it as far as I can see. Many of my pistol students are cross-dominant. Maybe over 20%.

my son is left handed. his mother is left handed and her dad is left handed...

being left handed is a genetic trait like blonde hair blue eyes or straight teeth, perky breasts and soft doe eyes...long tan legs and....doh there I go again [:D]

I write with my left hand but shoot with my right hand. For many other things, i.e. using tools, painting, lifting, etc., I'm ambidextrous.

I've been told by the older folks that years ago in schools, the Palmer Method of writing was used and use of the right hand was demanded so a lot of potential lefties were forever "scarred" emotionally.[:)]

I've also been told that baseball and fishing have had lot to do with it. Baseball because except for first base and pitching, throws are more easily and efficiently made righthanded and across the body. The companies who manufactured fishing reels made the right hand the crank hand from day one.

Guess what - I haven't a real clue as to why but thought these might be of help.[:)]

If the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body, then only left handed people are in their right mind!!!!!!!!!!!!

After years of working at it, I can now successfully turn on a light switch over 50% of the time with my left hand.

So you can lose the right glove more than the left is what I find.

I write with my left hand and sight with my left eye. Everything else I do right-handed.

So when I shoot a handgun, I cock my head to the side to align my eye with the sights. When I shoot a rifle I haven't much choice but to sight with the right eye because shooting left-handed is a disaster.

I have always been wary of left-handed people......I would like to see the government establish re-education camps for the functionally left-handed so they can be retrained as useful, productive right-handed citizens.......Left-handedness can & should be stamped out...

Any of you other older lefties have a teacher that tried to convert you. I was in 1st grade in 1964. My first grade teacher announced the first day of class that left handed people were not normal and no one in her class was left handed.

She figured out three of us were left handed and our desks were place closest to hers where she could keep an eye on us. Any time she saw one of use our left hand, she would wack us with a ruler.

The old bat was fired the summer after my class moved up. To this day I can write with either hand, equally bad...[;)]

For about two seconds....my handwriting was so bad that my second grade teacher pointed out that she could write more neatly with her left hand than I could with mine....and maybe I was right handed.....

"No. No. Use your left hand. Just try to write neater."

I write and throw left handed, but my father is right handed so he taught me how to swing and shoot and everything else right handed, so I guess that makes me ambidextrous?

I've been told, and I dont know if its true, that animals are primarily left handed. An animal when running tends to angle left, or a bird when flushed often will go to the left. Supposedly thats why horse races turn left and dogs shake left pawed. Just something I heard.
