I use this online translator. In case you want to understand some Spanish or another language just cut and paste then choose the language and click on translate. I don't know a lick of Spanish and this has come in handy for me.

It doesn't translate as well as you may think. It gives you the jist of what is said - or what you say - BUT - to a native speaker it's a pretty humorous. ... or, so says a friend of mine in Bremmerhaven! [:D]

The on-line translators come in handy when you are trying to translate one or two words, but sentence structure can leave a bit to be desired. They also do not account for occupational colloquialisms- a rubber tired backhoe loader is a "mano de chango" or monkey's paw- but only to folks from Mexico. Tried one program- manhole (as in sewer) came out as "holes of man". Hmmm. "Out of sight, out of mind" becomes "Invisible idiot". Keep sentences short and direct, avoid slang, and you should not get more than a broad grin from a native. And remember, the difference in Spanish between a cold beer and a fried beer is one letter! The most imporatant expression you can learn is Spanish is probably "Como se de-say" or "How do you say..."

My wife translates at her job and runs across several different dialects of spainish. Depending on the dialect and usage a word can have several different meanings and translations.

It doesn't work! I entered "entre y tome asiento" ("come in and sit down") and it translated to "between and it takes a chair".

It has trouble with Spanish pronouns, too ... but, then again,
so do South Americans![:D][:D][:D]
