Adding audio files to a DVD slide show ... anyone?

Any help out there?
I'm attempting to make my first DVD slide show and want to put some backround music behind it. I'm using NERO burning software that came with my CD/DVD burner.
I get an error that I cant use the file type my audio files are saved in. I think the problem is that I need MP3 files and the music I'm trying to add are MIDI ... is there any way to re-format and save the music I've selected in to MP3 format?
