'Gaming disorder' to be recognized as mental illness

Its symptoms include the inability to control when and how to play video games. (Source: CNN)

(CNN) - Playing video games too much and too often soon will be recognized as a mental health disorder.
Poll
Do you think playing video games too much can cause a mental health disorder?
Yes. Video games are as addictive as drugs.
No. What nonsense!
Not sure.

"Gaming disorder" will be added to the official list of diseases by the World Health Organization next year.

Its symptoms include the inability to control when and how to play video games.

Another red flag is when someone chooses games over other interests in life and keeps playing despite negative consequences.

The decision doesn't mean that playing games in itself is a problem, but experts said it should all be seen in the context - where, why and how much someone plays.

Adding "gaming disorder" to the list means that it will be recognized by doctors and insurance companies.

I always thought that people that played games for hours on end were nuts!!

I guess I was right. I knew I was the only sane person left in this world, now it's been proven[:D]

My brothers grandkid was raised on video games. His mother used them as nanny to keep him from bothering her I suppose.

Now in his early teens his IQ was tested at 69 . My personal opinion is that he was so involved with the games that he didn't learn anything else. Is that mental illness ? I would classify it as child abuse myself. He is socially and educationally inept , not mentally ill. He just needs to be reprogrammed into the world around him and I think he will be OK if that is done.

    Obesity is another SSD enabler.

Disability was NEVER intended to be a reward for BAD behavior and voting behavior.

No wonder the system is going broke.

Grouch Attack is addicted to "social media". Before that it was internet poker. I can attest to the debilitating nature of the addiction. The secondary affliction is obesity. The addict gets almost zero exercise while fixated on the computer or phone screen. GA "forgets" to prepare meals, wash dishes, or clean house BUT never forgets to charge her device battery.

Hate being the bearer of BAD NEWS.

I've been able to teach children to be better in mathematics without teaching them mathematics. You can teach a child to better utilize their ability to plan, and that improves their academic performance not only in math, but in reading comprehension. So, what I would say, is we didn't make the children smarter, but we taught them how to use what they have more efficiently, and better.

The good news, people can "out work" their counterparts. Produce more and faster or better than the other guy and you're good to go.

Recent brain imaging research is showing that they affect the brain?s frontal cortex ? which controls executive functioning, including impulse control ? in exactly the same way that cocaine does. Technology is so hyper-arousing that it raises dopamine levels ? the feel-good neurotransmitter most involved in the addiction dynamic ? as much as sex.

What is amazing to me is a good friend of mine has epilepsy. When his meds are good and he is not stressed he can work. (And is a pretty high $ consultant in the peoplesoft world) But if his meds get out of whack or he has to travel a lot he locks up more often Windows 95.

But he can get fired with no cause and cannot get disability at all and is not medically cleared to drive. Here you have someone with a true medical disability that has paid quite a bit into SS and cant get any coverage and fatso the xbox addict gets full coverage...

Time to drain that swamp also.
