Excuse my ignorance on the subject but could someone give me the "nutshell" version of shipping ammo? Are there different rules for different states? Does it need to be shipped a certain way by certain carriers? Thanks!

How much of a hassle is it to ship a box of ammo from one individual to another? Is UPS the one to use and about how much?

Hi. I'm new to this site and new to selling ammo. I learned a few things recently by selling a full box of vintage ammo on here. I thought five bucks to send it priority mail would be no problem. Well, before actually mailing it, I researched and see as most of you know I'm sure, I should not do that. So I thought, no problem, I see I can just send it UPS. When I did, they wanted $15 to do so. How do you guys handle shipping ammo? Is it customary to charge $15-$20 for shipping it? Will people bidding on here expect to be paying that much in shipping charges? Thanks for any advise you can give me.

I sold a box of obsolete ammo on auction the other day ( the first in a while )and cannot believe the hassle. Of course the postal service is out.I boxed it up following UPS guiedlines and took it to their store.I was told I would have to take it to their main office
about forty miles away. They did not bother to mention that they opened at 4:30 P.M.,go figure. Close by is a FedEx terminal so I stopped in and was told bluntly that they did not ship ammo, period.
I checked their website and found instructions on shipping small arms ammunition. I know people who ship ammo by not mentioning what is in the box,but I was trying to do it the right way. This was a lower 48 ground shipment,20 rounds, not a nuke.

Robert Cole's response to an earlier thread indicated that you can ship ammo via UPS. That reminded me of something I've been wanting to ask you all. What does ORM-D mean?

Every time I get a bulk shipment of ammo from Midway or Cabelas it has a sticker on it that says ORM-D (and one that says HEAVY!).

    Thanks,

I have to ship about 500 rnds of ammo and I live in a small little town. will ups or fedex do a pick up on this. I tried to ship though the closest store but was told i had to go to a hub, same as shipping a pistol. I have never shipped ammo before. The guy i traded a gun for wanted this ammo and i'v been trying to get it to him for about month now but haven't had to make a trip anywere close to a hub. And with being laid off i dont want to go 80 miles out of my way just to ship ammo.

I had wanted to do a give away of a couple of boxes of original Winchester Black Talons ammo for my 100th post but looking into the shipping it looks like it might be more trouble than its worth. I understand USPS is out of the question. Anyone ever shipped ammo? What's the procedure? Thanks.

The UPS instructions baffle me. In simple language, how do I prepare a box for shipping ammo? Is the ORM-D label needed or not? Can I download it?

    Thanks

I bought some 460 weatherby ammo from GB (at a very good price)and the fella just outside New Orleans is getting nowhere trying to ship to me. Is there any one in the New Orleans area that would be willing to take this ammo from him and ship to me? I would pay all expenses and a bonus. Just contact me soon as I'm running out of options. Thanks.

I am going to use UPS ground with ORM-D lables but I need to know of any restrictions from one individual in Louisiana to another in Illinois. Is a copy of their FOID card all I need?

Yes, I am still alive (I think).

Anyways, I was hoping to educate myself here a bit. What's my most cost-effective way to ship ammo? It's a small package, but big-bore rounds, so even though it's smaller than a shoe box, it weighs 15#, and UPS/FedEx want between $25 and $30 for ground. Are there any cheaper alternatives?

    Thanks, all.

Guys, our sticky on the experts forum is 7+ years old and I'm wondering if there have been new restrictions placed in these years. I have a couple of boxes of old Colt .32 long that I want to put on the auction side. I don't want to go to jail for this little amount of money.

    Thanks,

UPS allows ammunition to be shipped via ground. You need to mark the box "ORD-M". Mail Boxes Etc. uses UPS as their main carrier. Go back in and speak with the manager. MBE's are franchises, so you'll be dealing directly with the owner of that branch and not a corporation. If they still deny you, it's because of an anti-gun bias and not any imaginary law or policy.By the way, I live in southern Washington state and my MBE has no problem with me mailing any firearms related items.

Jason, Evil has it right on UPS procedure, although I know nothing of MBE's operations. You can also ship FedEx Ground. Both common carriers seem to give their terminal managers a lot of discretion on what they will accept. In some parts of the country, one operation is no prob & the other a PITA, in others, the opposite holds true. And of course in some places both are good or bad. Regardless, it *is* legal & if you have trouble, a call to the home office will help. You also asked in your other post what the cost will be. Depends entirely on weight and distance. Figure a minimum of $8 and a likely max of $20.

UPS makes it fairly plain on their websight that guns and ammo can be shipped, but only from a UPS service counter; this does NOT include affiliates like MBE. You are supposed to take it to a regular uPS center. MBE shipments are at the discretion of the manager.

It also seems that alot of it goes through the Post Office also. It seems if you just box it so it doesn't rattle and mail it and don't make a big to-do over it, no problem.

While I have received numerous shipments of ammo by mail, I do tell the folks sending it that it *is* absolutely illegal to do so - see Pub. 52, Section 341.21c (Postal Regs manual). I guess some folks would rather take a chance on spending an extended vacation in an enclosed space with large hairy gentlemen of limited intellectual capacity than spring for the extra effort of shipping by common carrier . . . .

I tried to ship ammo by Fed Exp. ground and they would not take it. I spoke to the security manager at the drop off site and I called their 800 number, both said that they only ship guns and ammo FFL to FFL. I took it to UPS and had no problems.

As I noted in my original post, the policy seems to change from given the political orientation of the person with whom you speak, especially the terminal mgr. I've shipped hundreds of boxes of ammo via FedEx Ground in the last two years. I have no FFL and less than 5% of the recipients have them.

Is it labeled ORM-D or is it ORD-M? Got an email from a ammo manufactor that says "ORM-D". Just wondering...

ORM-D, Is the acronym used by the USPS for "Other Regulated Material-Domestic" As far as I understand this covers items that are flammable, have a low flashpoint or are corrosive in nature.

Fedex shipping policy is determined only by their Dangerous Goods section, not terminal managers, not Fedex Office store managers.

Fedex only ships ammo by scheduled pickup, or by contractual arrangement.

Like Mail Boxes Etc, most UPS Stores and FedEx Stores are franchisees. Both the UPS and FedEx tariff state that you have to drop off at a company owned store or the terminal. Franchise locations may or may not accept firearms and/or ammo.
