Installing the Summerbeam

Some of y'all may remember of March of 2014 when I cut down the black walnut tree and sawed out the summerbeam.
Now it is time to install the giant beam. It is 17 feet long, 8 inches thick, and 18 inches high.
We moved it up onto the house floor with the crane. It is the heaviest timber I have ever lifted with the crane, but the crane raised it right up.
The beam was all rough with chainsaw marks. Had to sand it down with the disc grinder and 28 grit discs. Then fine sanded it with 100 grit.
Black walnut sawdust will make you sick, had to wear a respirator.
Adam and I cut pockets in the beam for the big timbers to fit in to.
We raised it in to place on top of the king post, and did final fitting on the splice.
The summerbeam is installed, ready to have the big timbers set for the loft.

That is a beautiful piece of wood.
Two hundred years from now somebody will recycle it into a new cabin. [:)]

No offense intended here at all James but, that may be the understatement of the year....

I wish I had 1/100th. of the woodworking skills you have Allen!!!
REALLY fine workmanship there sir!!!
for sharing your labor of love (and hard work ) with us
fantastic is the word that comes to mind
Or so my granddaddy claimed.
The loft comes out 11 feet, and there is a cathedral ceiling in the rest of the cabin.
That is artwork!
I will install four inches of foam between the logs, including spray in foam, "Great Stuff."
This will make an airtight seal, and is good insulation.
Than I will make up a mix of mortar and red clay, and apply 3/4 inch of this on the outside and inside of the insulation.

Thats nice. I was looking at a cabin over on Nottely Lake with a similar layout, but that one was clearly a factory log cabin. I do like the detail on the railing to the loft. Friends of ours have similar railings in their cabin. All the cabinet pulls are also "sticks"
