Well, I managed to get the Yakima crossbars and rooftop cargo carrier "parachute" installed on the Chevy Cruze today. It took a little time, but with a little assistance from the wife, it is done. I took it for a little spin and I don't think it is going anywhere. The real test will be Monday when I drive 68 on the interstate, but it handled 60mph just fine. I got a free sunshade and rain deterrent out of the deal too! I mounted it closer to the driver's side.

An oil change, some PM, and a pre-trip check, and we will be ready for our trip.......in a month. [:(]

We made a road trip to DC one year with a cargo carrier just like that except on a SUV. The harmonics of the wind going under the carrier drove us insane. Finally had to stuff towels under it and attempt to hold them in place with whatever. Just sayin.

Jon,where are you going on your trip?????? By the way, we had one of those carriers and they were awesome. Freed up a lot of room in the expedition. They are pretty aerodynamic too. Problem is, what the hell do you do with it when you only use it once a year or so. We sold ours after about five years at a yard sale for 30 bucks[:(] Getting too old to drive everywhere and fly now instead. Oakie

Try to keep it under 70 if you have a head wind. You may take off!

    Have fun.

For storage, I put 4 eyebolts in the ceiling of the garage. Used light weight rope, pull it to ceiling until I need it again.

Put a roof carrier on a Dodge Dynasty, did the Virginia-Colorado run a few times. Worked great.

taking a pickup with a topper would be a lot easier...wonder if encountering a big semi in a strong crosswind will flip the car over

That's a good idea. I was scheming up an easy way to lift it on and off the car, right to the garage rafters. The carrier is easy to lift, just a bit awkward for one person to slide on the roof rails.

Heading down to Missouri. We are going to visit some friends down in Jefferson City and then meander down to Branson. I have never been to Branson. We are meeting the in-laws down there, as they go every year. Between those two stops and all the stuff we have planned in between, it should be a good time. I talked and have tours lined up at Sierra Bullet Company and Starline Brass Company as well. I am really looking forward to those! [:)]

With the gap in between the roof of the car and the cargo box, I don't see that being an issue. Plus it is only 16" deep. It looks a lot bigger in the picture.

Yeah, when I had the car up to 60 mph on our little test run, you could hear a small howl. I looked at the wife, smiled, turned the radio up, and yelled, "Is this how a woman fixes a car noise?" She found it quite funny. [:D]

We've had one of the old style sears units since my daughter was an infant. The bottom finally started to crack last year so I threw it out. our new Thule came in last week, cross bars should be in later this week just in time for trip to the beach. For storage I rigged a bicycle lift with some snap hooks and some wire to lift it up to the ceiling in the garage.

    Capt,

I was envisioning something similar. This makes it a bit easier to see. Nice set-up. [8D]

You have to be careful to mount the end where the rope comes out so you have enough room to get the rope almost parallel to the ceiling since that is how the release unlocks. When I first put it up it was a bear to get it to release. I have 6 of those in the garage, most have bikes on them but they come in handy to mount other things as well.
