Turkey call lids Picture

I got an order for two turkey calls this week. One from a man in upstate PA that is a big Penn state fan, and one from a lady that is a big time bow hunter, from Nebraska. I am hand carving these lids right now, but need to get a laser cutter. It just takes too much time and I lose all profit, making the lids.I like doing the inlays and carving though, so I am on the fence so to say. I sell them for 30 buck, and it is more of a hobby then a business anymore. Oakie

That is cool, but to cumbersome and large for what I need. I want something that can do fine scroll work and letters and pictures. I found one for 300 bucks. I just not sure it is worth it for a hobby or not, but I enjoy what I do. I will have to see. Thanks though. Oakie

Might be worth it for a more profitable hobby. You do only the tops? They provide the box?

A laser engraver might solve some of your troubles.
Interestingly, yesterday I was fooling around with the call Merle sent me. Looking forward to fall turkey season here.

No, I make the calls from start to finish, including the box. Long boxes, short boxes, Mississippi scratch boxes. Takes me about 20 to 30 hours per box, depending on what I am making.

Roger, you and I know it is a labor of love. I had one call that took almost 40 hours and ended up giving it to a friend, that fell in love with it. My very first call, took 30 hours. I was just a plain box call and I ended up autographing it, and giving it to my dad for his 65th birthday. He used it to call in his first turkey and harvested it. After that, he retired it to his display case[:(] I told him to use it and I will make him another one. I guess the most frustrating thing is, making a call that looks great and sounds like poop, then having to keep adjusting it to get it to sing. Finding the right pitch can be hard, when you only can hear out of one ear. I am almost tone deaf. Cracked it while scuba diving. I can still get them right, it just takes time. I cannot wait to come up and see your set up. I would love to make a call with you or just learn some tips from the best[;)]. Oakie

My oldest daughter is an architecture student and is very spoiled that I have a pretty decent woodshop at the house so she does not have to stand in line to use the tools at school. EXCEPT for the laser cutter, (however my brother has one on order so she can use that one without having to schedule time weeks in advance.)

How thick is that stock? I know K burns through luan easily and up to a 1/4" solid but it leaves some serious charring on the cut lines. She usually will paint them after cutting to hide the char. (sometimes it can be sanded off) Some of her models may have several hundred small parts that are laser cut and then assembled. It is a pretty impressive tool.
