Yep, always hated those commercials, but I'll bet there are millions who buy into it yearly.

The thing that I always the thought was funny is that the crook always runs away the second the alarm goes off.

    What if he doesn't?

I detest those Brinks ads. They depict the American family as a flock of sheep waiting for the slaughter.
When the family hears the burglar rattle the door, they are terrified. They are too scared to do anything.
Passively they cower, waiting for something to happen.
In a moment, the big, handsome man from Brinks calls the home.
He tells the mommy that he will call the police.
The family is too passive to even dial 911.
    Makes me sick.

I don't have Brinks Home Security.
Here is how the security works around here. The burglar gets 50 feet from the house, my dog starts barking like hell.
    I grab the .44
Then, we shall see if the burglar wants to come inside and play with the big boys.

IMO a security system is there for long trips when you leave the house empty. You can't bloody well grease a burglar when you are not there...

but I agree: when I see those commercials I want to slap that puzzy of a man around. You know the one who says "someone tried to break in" in a * panicky voice

The main benefit of a monitored security system (doesn't matter which service) is as KSUmarksman said "there for long trips when you leave the house empty". The other important benefit of a security system (monitored or not) is the audible alarm waking me so I can pull the LOADED 9mm out of the nightstand drawer and confront a threat!

If you can't feel the music; it's only pink noise!

Yeah my folks are always getting calls from their friends ADT Home security... "can you drive by and make sure the house is OK?" Because there is a "glitch" with the fire alarm.... Now if there was a fire or god forbid a break in it would take at least 5 minutes to make the call to my parents, if they drove by to check on the place it would take them 10 minutes to get there, IF it was on fire then it would take another 5-15 minutes for the fire department to respond... so 20-30 minutes response time for an expensive service... If the house is on fire for that long depending on the circumstances at the very minimum they lost all of their possessions, and a shell of the house will remain, most likely they will come home to a smoldering foundation... (chances are a neighbor would call it in long before ADT even figured it out)

and just what do you have in mind that is any better, a dog, armed gaurd?

first off i am my back up alarm system, i have a alarm that works while i'm not here, and will wake me when i'm sleeping whether it be an intruder or a fire, i have had several businesses that have been broken into 6 min for police to arrive both times, and both times the audible alert did work in discouraging any further entry, sure there are instances of smash and grab where a alarm means nothing but not in most residence

second, unless you live in a municipality that has it's own alarm service almost any alarm company goes through a call center, then they call you, you give then a password, if you do not answer correctly, or do not answer at all they call your local pd, there job is done, thats exactly what there selling, there is no deception on how it works, it is cut and dry plain and simple

third, so you dont like the advertisement, so what, that is called marketing, don't cut off your nose to spite your face, deodorant commercials as well as many other imply getting a hot date if you where their product, do you not choose to wear it because you know it doesn't work that way, no you learn how to read between the lines

edit: i guess next we should throw out our smoke detectors because they don't put out fires

Reminds me of what happen to the brother of a good friend a few years ago:

    House caught fire.
Fancy Brinks system was suppose to call the fire department.
    Didn't happen.
    House burns to the ground.
    Thank God nobody was hurt.
Brinks want's the homeowner to continue paying on the 12 month contract!
(ex)Homeowner suggest where Brinks can put their bill.
It's too late for me, save yourself.

The fancy alarm lets me know what time my precious snowflakes come home. Arguing with Dad that you really did not come in at 1 AM when the alarm log clearly shows that your code deactivated the system at that time and the back door was open for x seconds is a pretty difficult one to win.
