Range problem in NW Alabama

The city of Sheffield Alabama is trying to remove our CMP affiliated club from our shooting range. We have been here for 33 years. It is on city owned property. We have 400 members in the NASA club(North Alabama Shooting Association). We have sent a CMP 22 match team to Camp Perry the last 3 years. We also shoot USBR 22 benchrest competition. We held the USBR national championship match on our range for the last 2 years. Our members have purchase many of the 22 rifles that have been sold by CMP South Store in the last few years. The city council is going to meet a 6pm in city hall on Monday Feb. 6 to decide our fate. If you are anywhere close, please come to the meeting to help our cause. Thanks, Pearyw

Similar Problem here in Gig Harbor, Washington - They started out with Noise and Safety, but It looks like they are gonna get us on Lead/EPA Stuff. Club has been here since 1943.

Creeping Incrementalism, and Burgeoning Governmental Restrictions....

Same thing has happened with drag strips over the years. They get them shut down because of noise violations.

Do you have a lead reclaiming process for your range.. We were getting hassled by the EPA so our club invested in a machine to sift the dirt and reclaim all the lead.. We hire a reclemation company to do the Trap and skeet Field. Actually they pay us to get the lead out!!! Last year they took 65 55 Gal drums of lead shot off of the trap field..It keeps the EPA creeps at bay...

Yeah, we mined our Shotgun Ranges, but there is still a lot of Lead in the Stream nearby...

We got out TONS of Lead. I think I heard they generated a lot of money for the club.

If you are near water, there is a bigger problem with the EPA.. Couple of our ranges have been forced to Steel Shot, because they shoot over water.. A couple shut down due to the cost .. And Yes our club got a substantial chunk of money from the reclemation company last year...The other club I belong to sells the reclaimed shot for 25 bucks a bag.. Factory shot today is around 49.00 per bag now...

This place is an EPA disaster. There have been chemicals dumped here over the years. We have shot here for 33 years, so there is plenty of lead in the ground. We are within an 1/8 of a mile from the Tennesse river. A total clean up would cost a fortune. The origonal owner just gave it to the city. The city has a grant to take core samples of the ground. We are interested in the results. I use to ride dirt bikes on the property when it was the cities garbage dump in the early 1970s.

I am meeting with a city council member at our range today at 2:30 to run a noise test. We will have several of our club members and local police officers to fire several different firearms so we can see what the noise level is like in the nearby neighborhood.

garland shooting range goes to court mon to see if they can keep their doors open. they have been there since 1941. Now Rowlett has claimed that bullets have landed in peoples yards, windows have been shot out and 1 person has been shot.

My question is, why did they feel the need to build the city dump and issue all those permits to build houses around a gun range all these years? Did they not think something could go wrong? I think the city should buy the range for $1M and give him = amount of land where they deem it safe for him to rebuild.

The NRA is as useless as tits on a boar hog when it comes down to actually helping ANYTHING except themselves and their pocketbook. You could call them and BEG for help, they offer to sell you something and talk in circles.

Yes, I am a NRA member, PATRON life, since since I was 15.

This is simply another attack on the right to keep and bear arms.
It says in the article that noise is the biggest concern, yet when range patrons conducted a test the nearby recycling plant was the noise and not the range. Then when councilmen were invited to witness the test they refused.
    See quote
quote:"We couldn't hear anything," Jones said. "The only thing we could hear was the recycling plant."
Club members attending a council meeting last week offered to perform the same test for the council, but no one accepted the offer.
Even in the southern states now governments are attacking firearms from all angles.
Lets make the ownership and use of firearms as expensive and inconvenient as possible since the supreme court says we can't outright ban firearms. Nevermind what the constitution says.

Then I guess you missed the post in the newspaper article where the NRA attorney recommended a local attorney. It may not have been much, but that sounds like help to me.
