Once you have a flare up, you can start on cherry juice but to get rid of the pain you will need to get some Indocin (indomethocin) right away. Go!
I had a episode with it a couple of months ago,.. OUCHHHHHHHH!!!![V]If you do a search on here you can read all about some really great advice I got from the folks on here. Cherry juice helps a lot. I got a shot of some kind of steroids and prednisolone (??) pills along with a few pain pills. I had eaten a bunch of walnuts and that is what triggered mine, I think everyone's trigger is different.

The triggers for me are;
Stress, dehydration, fine red wines, shrimp eaten to excess, I think sardines are one too.
Gout sucks!
Gout is caused by overproduction of Uric Acid crystals in your bloodstream, they turn into little pointy "cigars", and collect wherever the blood flow lets them.
I've had it twice before, and the weight of a single sheet while sleeping is unbearable! I started a regimine of 2-3 capsules each day, especially in the Spring, and I haven't even had a flare up in almost 3 years!
No, you don't have to take pills when you have a gout flareup. However, when the mother of all gout attacks hits you, if you don't take something for it, shooting yourself in the head will become an attractive option.
Prednisone??? Well now, that's real good! Prednisone will do about as much good for gout as you dancing around a big rock, nude under the full moon, shouting obscenities at the devil, then killing a chicken and burning the feathers while muttering various incantations from old heavy metal rock songs. Where'd you find this "doctor"? I guess he thinks the prednisone, a steroid drug, will reduce inflamation. Yeah? Well maybe, but you can see how well it worked. Five days is enough time for the gout to run its course and go away on its own. He really doesn't know how to treat gout....really he doesn't.
Naproxen Sodium (naproxen) is a good med for gout, but not the best. Naproxen is another drug in the family of non-steroidal anti-inflamatory drugs, or NSAIDs, but has a higher success rate with gout than acetomenophine or the like. Naproxen can be had by Rx dosages of 500mg and up (if you have insurance, to this way), but one popular over-the-counter (OTC) brand of naproxen is called Aleve. Just take 800-1000 milligrams of it about every eight hours for flare-ups.
Get your doctor to prescribe colchecine. If you are interested in getting the whole spiel, send me an email.
i keep hearing allopurininal, is that an otc or prescription?
Alopurinol is to prevent gout attacks, once you have the flare up, its no use taking it.
But you will usually get diarrhea.
My friends with gout have standing refills for colchicine, indocin and hydrocodone.

Indomethacin is my med of choice; colchecine makes me sicker than death itself and gives you pure liquid diarrhea so bad you will realize the * is indeed totally water proof. . The Vicodin will deal with the top edge of the pain, letting you sleep and rest.
I had my first attack at 24. Your diet and beer drinking without adequate water consumption could be an issue.
