Factory Remington Ammo

I have disliked Remington factory ammo for quite some time, today just proves it. Went out a few days ago to sight in the 223 with my son for coyote hunt coming up. Gun kept mis firing, thought it may be older ammo so I purchased a BRAND NEW BOX of factory ammo from local shop. Went out today to shoot and gun fired fine for the first two shots, after that, it went back to mis firing. The primers are dented and shell should have fired but did not. Any advise on this subject. I am shooting a single shot Rossi (I know, not top of the line) but it should fire since the primers are dented no? HELP PLEASE!!!

Thats kinda odd. I have shot a lot of factory remington ammo and never had a misfire except for 22lr (which there always seems to be a few duds in any value pack of any brand).

Perhaps your firing pin is a tad short? Have you fired using any other brand of ammo?

Do you perhaps have a field gauge for the rifle?

Try a different brand of ammo, see if the problem persists.

Happens with old and new ammo. Would look close at the rifle. It may be leaving a mark but is it had enough.

As was said try some other ammo, A lost of .223 ammo has what would be called a Hard Primer it really need to be hit. Manufactures could be afraid a being Sued.

shot an off brand, STAR I think....same thing happened. I was told that it may be a dirty firing pin mechanism or something that is causing the pin to not come out far enough, but it is denting the primers on the shells...

I think you shoudl check your firing pin for chips or flakes or try replacing the firing pin spring.

    It's NOT the ammo.

It's a down and dirty method, but you can check pin protrusion on that action with stacked feeler gauge blades so long as they are clean and straight.
Find the ones that add up to .048-.052 and one other to place over the pin tip.
Hold the hammer forward and lay the stack next to the firing pin, the additional odd blade needs to extend over the pin tip to check for clearance.

If this is an older gun there may be crud in the firing pin port. If it's new it may be a short firing pin, excess head space or a combination of both with excess tolerance stacking.

had that problem with my rossi in 30-06 , had to go back for a fix , it could also be cold weather and a dirty fireing pin /spring if you live where its cold

I have used Remington Core-Lokt ammo with good results for years in a couple different calibers. This past year I had the SAME EXACT thing happen with a box of .35 Whelen factory ammo. The same rifle fired the Hornady ammo I also brought with, without any issues. Not a serious situation at the range, but could be very unfortunate in time of need like when out in the woods.

Take a can of carb cleaner with a nozzle attached and hose the firing pin hole out backwards with it. It should flush the gunk (if any) out. Lube it with light gun oil and see if it will fire then.
