If he was in uniform or armed they will add that charge too. Hope he enjoys many years in fed prison.

Fresno is about 40 miles west of me. In fact, both my wife and I work there. There are some commenters on the local paper who are of the opinion that this guy was promoted beyond his ability level due to political correctness and affirmative action. That, and his training officer as a rookie apparently was the present chief of police, Jerry Dyer. Dyer has had his own share of problems, including steroid abuse, alleged cocaine abuse, and the fact he can not deny an affair (and possibly more than one) with a 15 year old girl when he was a patrol officer. He now claims to be a born-again Christian who shouldn't be questioned about past, aberrant behavior on his part.
There is a lot more of this story ongoing and in the archives of the Fresno Bee, if anyone is really interested.

I grew up in Fresno. The PD never did have a great reputation all the time I lived there (1964-92). My experiences with individual officers was 99% positive but there was one incident that almost went real bad.

I got into it with a patrol officer one night in 1976 when he threatened to beat up a guy I was with just because he had whistled loudly out on the sidewalk. Never figured out why he was so bent out of shape but the cop's face was red and he was really agitated. I recognized the name on his name badges and had heard he had a reputation for beating people in cuffs. When he told my friend he was going to lay him out with his club if he whistled again I stepped in and told him back off. He threatened to arrest me for interfering and I said fine, but if he laid one finger on me while I was cuffed he'd better go ahead and kill me because I would come and kill him.

I thought it was on right there. He surged towards me but other uniforms dragged him away from me. The fact that I wasn't arrested by the other cops probably says something about their opinion of him.

I met with a captain the next day who glossed over the whole incident. I wrote the mayor and entire city board of directors detailing my encounter with officer Ed Winchester. Shortly after I left Fresno I heard he was made chief.

I worked in the underground garage at the courthouse in the late 70's. I left Fresno in '91, and not much had changed. That story is light weight, compared to what was going on back then.

I wonder how well "received" he will be in prison? Dirty cops are about as popular and child molesters in the system.
