44 mag revolver

I am interested in buying a 44 mag DA revolver. I am thinking about a S&W mod. 29, or a Colt anaconda, or a Dan Wesson. I like the Dan Wesson best, but which is the best value?

You're looking at a pretty stiff price for all three. Personal choice is what it boils down to. I personally prefer S&W revolvers.

Amen. Built like a beast. And if you want a lighter trigger, you can install Wolff springs and still be money ahead.

Ruger Redhawk currect production comes witha 4" barrel , can all so be found with 5 1/2" , 7 1/2" and 7 1/2" with factory scope rings , Super Redhawk comes with a 7 1/2" or 9 1/2" barrel and scope rings

    Dan Wesson!
The most accurate too - IMHO.

Barrel change interchangeability is a big plus and they are accurate. The Dan Wesson would be my choice hands down. I like the Smith as well but in .41 mag.

I personally don't care for Rugers but they are over built and can handle just about any load that you can force into them. They also offer a very good value. In my opinion; for magnum calibers it is very hard to improve on an N-Frame S&W.

go with the Dan Wesson. IT will be the strongest and likely the most accurate of the three and by far the most versitile

Question: Why a double action in 44 mag? The reason I ask is that most everyone I know shoot 44 magnum in single action mode due to recoil. Hell, even Dirty Harry shot shot his S&W 29 in single action mode. Why not get a good single action like this one. http://www.ruger.com/products/newModelSuperBlackhawkStandard/specSheets/0811.html

I have an Anaconda, a Smith 29-2, and a Ruger Super Blackhawk.

If you are stuck on a double action, I would reccomend the Colt, though they are getting a little pricey these days. It has the heavy barrel lug, which reduces recoil somewhat, and is pre-drilled for a scope, if you should find the need for one, which I never did.

Smooth action, though it doesn't come near the Python in finish. I believe it was meant to be a big bore version of the Python, but lacked the fit and finish of one.

I sold a Ruger Redhawk that could outshoot most rifles. Had a 4X Leupold EER scope.
I sold that Redhawk about 20 years ago. There are three guns I wish I had never sold. That is one of them. Which is the best value?? No clue. Would I pay a serious premium for that Redhawk I let getaway if I could find it today?? Yes.[V]

I have a S&W 629 classic 6" barrel. I like it but have thought about selling it to buy an Anaconda. Probly should just hang on to it and save for the colt.

Bought 3 of those for Christmas presents this year, and have had one myself for some time.

    Everyone seemed to enjoy them.

Any name brand revolver will do what you want. I think Ruger DA revolvers are hideously ugly but owners love them. I had an Anaconda years ago and found it clunky and disappointing. A friend loves his Dan Wesson and they are strong.

I confess to usually preferring the original. I find the 44 Magnum too punishing in recoil for much fun shooting and own one mainly because I feel like I should. Here's mine.

the smith will certainly have the best double action trigger. the ruger is most likely the strongest and the dan wesson the most accurate. for hunting all will do the job well, it just depends on what you like the best. i have to have a smith.

Thanks to all. Lots of good info. I will look for the best buy, but it looks like that will be a Dan Wesson. I like the sights and the trigger and you can get a wide varity of grips.
    Thanks again.

If you are going to actually carry it, I would recommend the S&W Model 329NG 'Night Guard'.

    [img][/img]SW329NGSimplyRuggedHolster003.jpg

    [img][/img]MormonLakeScout2010019.jpg

Light at 29 oz. Has XS Sights 'Tritium' front sight and Cylinder & Slide rear which combine (IMO) to make the single best practical handgun sighting system available. 6 rds of .44 magus, 2.5" barrel, scandium-frame, super tough corrosion resistant finish.

It is near the perfect .44 Mag revolver package, unless you want nothing more than a range gun, then all bets are off.

if we are talking "used" I would recommend the S&W 29-2 or 29-3, or the 629 or 629-1 if you prefer stainless.

if we are talking "new", I'd say Ruger Redhawk.

I don't think the new Smiths' quality is there, and Colt, well, you're just paying a premium for the name, as usual, IMHO.*

*this does not apply to 1911's IMHO

Bamavol - This is just an observation of all these types of posts that I have seen on GB. Please do not take offense by it, you are not the only one that has done this.

I have noticed that people ask for input and then ignore it when they already know what they want to purchase to begin with. The following are the stats for this post.

    Out of 28 affirmative responses
    14 - posts were for S&W
7 - posts were for Ruger
4 - posts were for Colt
3 - posts were for Dan Wesson

Even though Dan Wesson only gets 3 positive responses of the 28 responses, Bamavol ends up going with the Dan Wesson that he originally liked. Oh well![:0]

Agree with the opinion of Single Action is all that is needed in the .44 mag pistol.

I like my old dragoon SA in 6" barrel.

Love my Colt Anaconda, it has been my back up firearm or main hunting handgun for 19 years. It is more accurate than my old 629, especially at ranges over 50 yards.
