Hello all , I have been using Nextel for several years now and the service is good within the city limits while working but in more rural areas i have little to no service (New york), what is the best cell service for the more rural/remote areas where cell towers are few and far between? I hear some service providers Roam to a "satalite" when a tower cant be located.....your thoughts and experience?

They all suck, you just have to find the one that sucks the least.

If you have not done so convert (get a new phone) to the new Nextel hybrid phones!

I did mine and I get much better service!

It uses the Nextel towers for your walkie-talkie and the sprint towers for your phone and data service.

After I converted mine over it now seems that I have no areas that I do not have service! My plan also has no roaming charges so if I have another companies tower near me I can still use my phone without worries of extra charges.

My only word of advice is go to a store to renew your contract!

I had problems ordering online with mine as I got a defective phone the first time and it was a major problem getting it replaced!

I had Nextel for a while but reception was limited in Central Vt. Switched to Verizon and have much better coverage. I miss Walkie-Talkie but I'd rather have the service. Someone told me Verizon owns most of the towers and limits other providers.

Never an ounce of trouble with Cingular.

Or, if you dont mine refilling, the Prepaid ones are good.

for just an all-around truck phone / kids school emergency phone Virgin Mobile is good. You can put $20.00 on it every 3 months, or 90 every like, 12 i think it is.

I paid 60 for my phone and about 100$ so far for texting / calling...

I think you will find that lack of service in rural areas is pretty common with all of them. I live in ND and service is hit and miss from one mile to the next except when you're adjacent to one of the interstates. The problem is money. In many areas it is not economically benificial for the phone services to erect the necessay towers. If only 300-400 people in rural areas of a county are going to use the service they are not going to erect a million dollar tower cause the payback is just too long. It's not about serving the customer!

Can't help you in N.Y.. But in AZ. I have Alltel and have gotten signal when I'm pretty far into the woods. It helps to be out of a valley.

i had nextel and they sucked so i paid a fortune to get out of the contract i signed with them and now i have ATT/Cingular which is the best for my area.
gotta ask around in the area in which you want service. i think it's different everywhere ...

I have gotten a good Verizon signal most places in the country I have tried. Sometimes takes a little creative positioning where we hunt in the more remote mountian ranges here. most towers are near towns and Interstates.

    How about a new tack??

Throw your cell out and get a pager.

Have had Verizon for about 10+ years and will never switch. Relatives have Cingular, Sprint and Nextel and they all say they suck. The only place I do not get service is in the deep woods of my PA hunting cabin.
