1st Year 4H

When my daughter wanted a pet rabbit, I made her join 4H for at least one year. This first year, she ordered a market pen of 3 rabbits (in addition to her pet Holland Lop) and put together a display board on growing and harvesting an herbal tea garden.

The Market Pen didn't do well in show, but they made weight, so they sold. (She made a tidy profit)

Her Lop took 3rd in Showmanship.

But the Herb Garden display won Grand Champion at the County Fair. Which means it went to the State Fair.

And won Champion.

But the pay-off for me, as a parent, is that Darling Daughter enjoyed the learning process so much she is staying in 4H. She told me she wants another crack at showing Market Bunnies. And she has ideas for more small projects.

Best line of the conversation:
ME: "Y'know you won't win Champion every year"
HER: "I won't win anything if I don't compete"

Note that she didn't say, "...enter" she said "...compete"

She gets that from her Momma.

I had a great time in 4H. We met in the church basement. I remember once Colonel Larson did a trick shooting demonstration right in the church basement where he used BB guns and .22 Marlin rifles to cut aspirin tablets apart one corner at a time.

Congratulations to you and your daughter! I'm glad she's in 4H.
Since so many are becoming more "urbanized," I was afraid that good organization might be going out of style.

Thanks! The organization itself is offering possibilities to folks in urbanized areas. I think that should strengthen 4H.quote:Originally posted by Flying Clay Disk
4H is a lot different organization now than when we were all younger though. A lot different! And some of the new direction I see in 4H is not very encouraging at all. Doesn't seem to bode well for the future.

Now you've piqued my curiosity. What specifically is it that bothers you about 4H?

Out here, we have the traditional 4H pursuits, but they've also gone a long way towards getting "townies" into the organization. In my mind, that's a good thing.
