My fiancee's daughter has one. They got it, in Atlanta, from the Bassett Hound Rescue Society, that might not be the exact name.
It is a good pet. It is very affectionate, it loves to curl up in your lap, if you can take a 65 pound lap dog.
They do bark a lot and have a loud, yelping bark.

My neighbors adopted a old, old bassett hound. Maddy use to be a house dog, but with age she began to give off a odor and now she stinks so bad that she had to become a outside dog. She comes over to visit and will stink up the garage. A couple of times she has sneaked into my shop for a rest on the carpet. I will holler,"Maddy get out!", and she slowly mopes from her spot, stops to scratch herself, and will give you a grin with her toothless smile. I have to get out the air freshner to clear the air. Maddy is a real sweet dog, but I was told the odor is common in Bassett hounds as they age and she has the worst.

Pros: They have a wonderful temperment.

Cons: They require a lot of grooming. They're musky and STANNNNNK! if you don' t keep 'em clean. Our Bassett's toenails needed trimmed twice a month. Plus, you have to watch out for infections in their eyes and ears.

They're tumor factories. These dogs get more kinds of cancer than any other dog I've seen.

Back and hip problems are bred into them. I mean, look at that dog. It's gonna have back problems.

Which leads me to the fact that they're lazy dogs and won't exercise unless you damn near force them to. So it's easy to end up with a fat dog that has back problems bred into it.

They're not small dogs. My ol' copper hound ran to 75 pounds in his prime. My next door neighbor had one that was (I kid you not) 105 lbs when he was two years old. This was before the dog got old and fat. I'm talking 105 lbs of muscle and bone, man!

Stupid? I've owned furniture that have more brains than a Basset hound. Basset lovers will tell you that they're just stubborn, but that's nonsense. In clinical tests, Bassets have proven themselves the least intelligent of dogs.

Dreyfus Antonio was an inteesting pooch, but I'll never have another Basset.
