Question about HID headlights

Do the bulbs have a filament?

The reason I ask is that I need to order new bulbs. On Amazon, there is a pair for $12.97, which is WAY cheaper than normal. Part of the description says "no filament."

    No, they have tungsten electrodes.

But, a true HID light will have a ballast; if all they are selling are the bulbs, that won't be the same thing as a factory HID.

The ballast is part of the car. It is just the bulb that I need.

At that price for 2 HID bulbs, don't expect much. Good ones will run about $40.00 each.

I think the question is: Should they?

Are there actual differences in manufacturing quality, material quality, life expectancy, etc., or is one manufacturer shooting for a far higher markup?

I have been "burned" by no-name bulbs & batteries on Amazon. Stick to name brands, even if it costs more.

Being SO cheap is why I am skeptical. If they work but don't last as long, it's ok because at that price, I can buy 3 sets for the price of one normal set.

Philips is known for high quality HID bulbs. Considered to be one of the best brands.
