    I assume you going to use a thread die? The major diameter is just below 0.500, so I would turn it to 1/2" and thread away.

    .498 diameter +0/-.003 will do a good thread for you.

    just turn it to 1/2 thread it and hit it with emory cloth to remove the fine burrs at the top of the threads to polish it a little
    remember the sides of the thread is ur contact points not ur points/valleys

    That is good advice for a bolt, But if the OP is going to do what I think he is going to do with it you dont want that thing to sag.

    I hope the OP is going to single point the barrel rather a Die, unless it is an adjustable die, start big and work down.

    And Yes, lightly emory down the points, clean, and check often.

    +2! And if you make good threads with a single point, you won't need emory cloth.

    You wont want sharp threads on a muzzle.

    If you cut the thread to .498" you won't have sharp threads.

    1/2-13 is UN Coarse
    1/2-20 is UN Fine

    Many electrical or special connections us other pitches to designate their threads as different. You may have been thinking about one of those or;

    1/4-20 is UN Coarse
    1/4-28 is UN Fine

    Correct, but neither would cutting it at .500. UN (Unified National) threads have a flat (or optional radius) on the crest of the pin (male) thread. They are actually measured at the pitch diameter on the thread which lies on the middle of the flank angles.

    thanks. i was thinking this was for a very specific use, where a 9mm barrel would have external threads......[B)][;)]

    Heff, let me rephrase that, cut the OD to .498" ;)
