To participate in a shark tournament, three days, first catching bait, second inshore and third offshore. Not cheap but oughtta be a blast and there's a chance I could make some of my fees back. 37' Topaz.

I hope you will not be using old, worn out greyhound racing dogs for bait. I have heard stories of shark fishermen using dogs that can no longer run due to age or health as shark bait. They are thrown in the water while still alive.

Here in New England I have heard nothing of the sort. The Captain makes his own chum and uses blues and stripers for bait. The dogtrack nearby is closed down.

5 guys on a 37' sport fisherman wouldn't leave too much room for dogs, or tinfoil hats for that matter.

While your greyhound story may be credible in isolated cases greyhounds are not in large supply in New England. Nor would professional charter captains be likely to expose themselves to the risk of animal cruelty charges or bad publicity by taking 4 or 5 people out and overtly abusing man's best friend in such a manner. Odds are great that one would offend more than one animal lover the first time out.

I have no plans of chumming with live greyhounds and am completely confident that no one else in the party or tournament has any such plans either.

I guess that this is one time that I would like to demand proof, as you suggest.

I'd prefer something a little more red blooded for chum, however, the thought of putting a large hook through a few and doing some trolling has great appeal.

BTW, my family was here in 1640, and donated a house to the RI gov't that was built in the 1690's. You did ask.

Maybe the track had to close down because they used all the dogs as bait?

He actually seems to be right, although how widespread the practice is, is up for debate.

Like I said above, I will be fishing off Long Island, not Reunion Island.

I didn't see anything about greyhounds in the article.

FYI, I heard that firearms were bad and that firearms enthusiasts should be migdolotomized.
