AMC Pacer or Pontiac Aztek?

AMC Pacer or Pontiac Aztek?

LOL, since we're having all these discussions on cars, I figured why not do this one. Which was the ugliest?

Some of you might be surprised to know what an AMC Pacer is worth. I totalled one out in an insurance claim once about two years ago -- I was, to say the least, shocked to discover the thing was worth close to six grand!

My initial impression of the Aztek (I remember the first day I ever saw one) was that someone at GM saw the movie "Vacation" and took the design of that car too seriously.

well i think the AMC is, but thats also thinking about having to work on the thing to get it started everyday. I really don't like the PT cruisers, now those are ugly.

Lotsa of new butt uglies out there. That new Chevy that's sposta look '50s makes me want to hurl[xx(][xx(]

Back to the original question the pacer takes quite a few ugly awards.

On the other hand looked at a new red and black Rousch Mustang last night......WOW what a car, until I got to the 43k price tag.[:(]

They're both as ugly as 2-dawgs-fawking, but each in it's own special way(s)![}:)]

Pacers are classic ...ugly as they are there are clubs and folks who really like them. they are rare in the car world. ( I think they look like a fishbowl on wheels. AZTEC...not so classic
Many ugly cars have become American Icons. consider the nash metro, volkswagen beattle, or avanti whatever for whatever reasons Americans like what they like and there doesn't seem to be a formula you can rely on.

The Aztek in my eyes it one of the strangist things to come down the pike in years. Looks like someone kicked it in the butt, and kicked it up into the shoulder blades. Nobody without a serious drug habit could have come up with that design!

That mistake has cost GM a fortune!

I hate to admit it, but I once, a LONG time ago, once was the proud owner of an AMC Pacer. Deep green in color, with the fake stick-on wood trim down the sides. I say "I" was the owner. Dad bought it for me. Told me that he would buy me one car and then I was on my own. 1977 model. Dang thing was absolutely indestructible! Got me through a couple years, then younger sister took it. After 4 years of her driving, my next younger sister got it. After 3 more years, my youngest sister got to drive it. She finally traded it in on something different. Had AMC's straight 6 4L motor in it. Only problem we had that was reoccuring was with the passenger side door. Ours was the "station wagon" model, meaning it was about a foot longer than the normal ones. And the passenger side door was freaking HUGE to make it easier for people getting in the back seat, looked like a barn door. Hinges kept breaking every other year or so. But...you could lay the back seat down in that sucker, and had room to do about anything you wanted back there. Remember, i was 16 years old, so you can imagine what "anything" was. [:D] Girls actually thought it was "cute". They called it my "moon car."

AMC Pacers and Gremlins are actually being actively collected now.

I would drive a Pacer before a Pontiac Aztec or Honda Element

LOL. My wife and I actually threaten each other with those cars. She'll threaten me by saying she'll buy me an Aztek and I'll threaten her by saying I'll buy her an Element.

My father always threatened me by telling me that he was going to buy me a light blue pacer but he would have some flames painted on it like the one in Wayne's World so that it was cool[xx(] Instead he bought me a 76 Olds Cutlass Supreme with the factory Hurst(sp) T tops and Hurst floor shifter. When I was 16 I thought I drove the ugliest car on the road. I would love to have it now.

When I was little my father acquired a "Robin Egg Blue" Gremlin. He put some pretty cool pin stripping on and did some modifications with the engine (not sure what). He tells me stories about drag racing with some of the local High School kids with muscle cars, and from light to light he could spank them. He stopped doing that when a car load of them chased him with baseball bats[:0]

Yes, my father is a bit weird

I second Nambu's comment about the Element. Ugly as it gets.

The Aztek by far - the Pacer at least has style and a "cult" like following, the Aztek pretty much personifies the reason that GM is going out of busines.

I had the misfortune of driving an Aztek for drivers ed...I'd take the pacer any day. The Aztek's split rear window creates a blind spot big enough to hide a Crown Victoria or other full sized sedan following about at 50 or so meters back....not to mention the side blind spots big enough to hide a full-sized van and the tendency of it to want to roll over in corners.

The Asstek is so ugly that I'd crush one if it were given to me. I don't think I'd have the heart to donate it to charity. Just doesn't deserve to live.

I'm not big on the Pacer either, but I'd LOVE to have a V8 Gremlin, especially if I could find a 401 to drop in it. A friend had one with a 304 when I was in high school. It's a good thing that the valves would float at about 4500 RPM, because it was almost too fast as it was.

I couldn't agree more! The Element is about as BUTT UGLY as it gets! I have to wonder what goes through one's mind when they actually pay for one!

I heard somewhere that the only way GM could sell those ugly Azteks was to rental car companies -- GM did sell them to the rental car companies by guaranteeing their resale value. Since the car failed so badly, I'm sure that bit GM in the rear. Another thing not counted on was the public's refusal to rent them!

A friend of mine in the Army has a Spec-4 in his unit that drives an Element and they kid him about driving the "birth-control" car. Cause no self-respecting male is ever gonna get some in a car that looks like that.
