460 Weatherby Mark V

Survivalist86Survivalist86 Member Posts: 3,105
edited May 2009 in General Discussion
I have a friend who is looking at a 460 Weatherby Mark V. Since all of my firearms were destroyed in a terrible safe melting accident, and I no longer own any firearms, I told him I had no experience with this firearm.

Anyone own one? Comment? Suggestions?

    Great Wooly Mammoth cartridge.

I have fired said rifle one time and that was plenty. I would put the recoil at five times that of a 30-06. There is no real use for this round on this continent.

Maybe I like hunting Hummers on the interstate[:D]

I enjoy shooting the big boys. How does the recoil compare to the 500 NE?

    One word -- RECOIL
I would bet that 80% of the 460 Wby's ever made have had less than one box of shells run through them. The owner shoots them a couple of times, puts it in the safe while the bruises on his shoulder heal, and only pulls it out once in a while to inflict pain on a shooting buddy who has not experienced it yet.
I have a .378 that has brutal recoil (no muzzle break or anything) with a 300 grain bullet - and have no desire to see what a .460 shooting a 500 grain bullet is like.

I used to occasionaly shoot the 500 NE. Not comfortable, but I'm a big boy and can handle it.

I just want the 460 for shooting targets. I have 500 rounds of brass, so I am set to load for it. I thought a real small grained projectile would make a fine hunting round.

I have not shot the 500 nitro, but based on the ballistics I would say that the 460 has a more violent recoil. A 500 grain bullet at 2650 fps in the 460 versus a 550 grain at 2100 in the 500 NE. Nearly all of Roy Weatherbys magnums are brutal.

Here is a chart from Accuratereloading - they like the big bores, so it is probably fairly realistic.
    http://www.accuratereloading.com/recoil.html
They show the .460 Wby as having quite a bit more recoil than a .500NE. I think that the high velocity of the weatherby gives more "felt recoil".

    But, what about your friend?

Right...this is all for my friend.

I believe you should sell all of your .460 brass and buy a gun that you can shoot without jarring your teeth loose, and you'll be able to re-sell it when your done. IMO.

Why would I want to do that? I have numerous puny firearms to shoot. I have always found it amazing that progun folks use the same argument that the anti-gun people use. "You don't NEED "assault weapons", why would you want them? They have no use in a civilized society"?

You don't need a Corvette, but people want them. You do not need a Hummer or an Escalade, but some people like them.

I WANT one. I do not hunt, but I do enjoy shooting the big stuff.

Well, I do not own a Vette, but I like my firearms. It is a hobby. Nice Freudian reference though....but you missed one of his sayings that is more relevent...Sometimes a cigar, is just a cigar.

I just ordered a Blackhawk Compstock for my .378. It is supposed to reduce recoil by 50-60%.
They say that a Mark V will "drop in" - but my rifle is a pre-mark V built in 1959 on a FN mauser action, so I am waiting to see how much inletting work is needed to fit the rifle.
I will give a report when it arrives and when/if I can fit it correctly for some shooting tests.

Thats cool! Will you keep us updated? I looked at a 338-378 too. I have a couple hundred empty cases for it also. I really like the big calibres for target shooting.

You forgot that the tree huggers are going to bring back the Wooly Mammoth. That cartage will then be in great demand. So buy the gun now and stay ahead of the crowd, when they open the season on those Woolies.

I actually think that the Mammoth experiment they are doing is pretty cool. I doubt we will see herds of them wandering the plains of Kansas, anytime in the near future.

Shot them both at the same session.

The Weatherby is significantly more punishing.

    I want one.
