Right now its between a Sig 556 or a Colt...anything better?
If money ain't a worry go with the piston over direct gas impingement.
Ruger SR556.

I had a POF, it was very nice but I just didn't feel like I was shooting a $2k AR15. I also began to notice very odd markings in the upper, left of when the bolt is closed. Looked like something was not right and had ate through the coating.

Piston ARs are a made-up solution to a non-existent problem.
DGI is the way it was designed and the way it works best.
If you can't maintain an AR the way it was designed, you're doing it wrong.
Does a 243 shoot with authority?? Back in the day, I had an agreement with the local game warden about my corn fields. Over X number of years I had over 300 one shot stops with my Browning 78 High Wall in a 243. Nuf said!!
To me, it comes down to personal preference and the deciding factors of barrel length, rate of twist, stock type, rails, etc. based on your personal intended use.
I know some swear by pistons...I've no interest in them but it's another option to consider.
With all of that said, I'd personally be happy with Colt, Bushmaster, DPMS, or Spike's Tactical, but only because these are the ones with which I have experience. I "know" from reputation that Sigs are good, as probably are the others mentioned here. You mentioned a narrowing of choices, and I feel that either Sig or Colt would be a fine choice IMO.
If you want a simple, straight out of the box, no frills 5.56/223 AR pattern rifle that is proven then I would go with a Windham Weaponry carbine.
They are the original Bushmasters before FGI/Remington had them shut down and moved. He reopened the factory after the no-complete clause expired. They are well made and carry a heck of a warranty...as in Lifetime.
Also own a Franken-AR. As in a Yankee Hill Machine upper, Bulldog barrel and PCF polymer lower. Looks like this:
Both work just swell. Of course these are not guns for fighting a war. These are guns for having fun with, maybe shooting animals with. I've yet to put more than a few hundred rounds through either of them at one time. So they always start a day properly cleaned. These guns give me no troubles for what I use them for.
If you are wanting a weapon for fighting do not buy what I bought. Buy better.
If you are wanting a weapon for long range varmint shooting do not buy a carbine at all. Pick your parts carefully and build or buy that "way the heck out yonder" coyote thwacker AR-15 Rifle.
I may get around eventually to selling one of my old bolt guns and the Franken-AR to get money for building a rifle length AR. Perhaps in 7.62 NATO (.308 Win, and yes I know about the pressure differences debate).
Don't have a need for such, just interests me.

I have both DI and piston set ups.
I like the piston AR better.
YMMV
Oh and I know how to clean and maintain both.
Then like Dennis and I add a Geisseles SSA-E trigger, it'll change your life!![8D]

The best make / model / features to buy has a heck of a lot to do with what you want to use it for.
How about an HK ? What would be the best Colt?
Pwillie, I have never used a complete hk rifle, just an upper. It was very nice.
The colt 6940 is awesome imo cause of the monolithic rail upper.
The best AR I've owned is one I built, I favored it over the $2k POF I had.
And I'd drop a geissele in anything I got.

Noveske, just because they got some hot girls on their shooting team.
Gotta' agree here, at least generally. Ask the ladies what they are shooting, and go with that!
For picking the "Best AR 15 Style Rifle", hard to beat those selections.
31 flavors, the price you are willing to pay, and what you perceive as a value will determine what you buy. I have owned many of the ones listed here and there was very little, if any perceivable difference in quality and performance. the important thing is that you buy yourself one,. especially while they are plentiful and priced well!!! +1 SSA-E

pwillie......I suggest you read some back issues of GunTest....they like the SIG, and the recent edition really likes the previous mentioned (by Chris) the Ruger SR556. I, on the other hand love my Colt HBar Target Match and it shoots far better than these old eyes even out to 500m.
Ignorance is saying a piston is not an improvement.
I have no reason other than experience to prefer a piston.
While I love the LWRC and Barret pistons I use PWS because they are the lightest best balanced pistons AR made.
While most of my ARs are DI I almost always take a PWS to the range simply because I know it comes home and goes right back into the safe as cleaning is a waste of time.
Not that cleaning a DI is a big deal just no mess with a piston; shoot and put away.
If you can handle some of these it might allow you to decide what is more important to you. I can say if you will mostly shoot off the bench than the benefits of the lighter PWS are irrelevant.
I use mine for CQB drills
