If I remember right, there were some years of the fiero that had problems catching fire.
    Look into it!

    4 letter word "Junk" IMHO
Can still get parts in the US, but UK no ideal
The 2.8L was a hotrod and the 3.0 replaced that engine, since around 1989, I think thats correct.
Problems were the transmissions, cooling systems, suspension systems and some minor electrical problems.
Lost one for a customer, but thats a differant story.

I would pass on by if I were you! This car is problematic from start to finish.

They had lots of problems getting enough air to cool that V-6. Burned engines were not unusual. Engine is behind the driver in a small compartment with little room for breathing.

It's a piloted fuel-air explosive. Any vehicle you have to jack up to change the oil filter on is a problem.

A buddy of mine loves them and still has three. One that he drives once in a while and the other two for parts....

Pontiac is a veiled attempt by GM to pass off cheap junk to the consumer for a nice profit.

Do you know why the Fiero had a rear defroster as standard equipment? To keep your hands warm while you're pushing it! [:D]

The engine fires that occurred in the 2.5 L 4 cylinder engine were due mostly to poorly made connecting rods. If you have a choice the last year of production (1988) was the best having better suspension, a 5 speed transmission, and a higher output engine.
I purchased one of first V6 GT's in 1985 at list price plus dealer mark up. I had to go to a special location to view the car since they were not yet available to the general public. The car was totally unique at the time. A two seater, mid-engine car was very exotic in 1985. It is true that oil changes were a pain in the posterior particularly when introduced. I will never forget the scratching of heads and confusion (I might as well have brought in the "lunar rover" ) from a "quick lube" type of place when I took it in for it's first oil change, I was turned away and had to go to the dealer. The engines top end had to be replaced within the first six months. A few years back I built a Ferrari 355 replica with a stretched Fiero frame and dropped a GM 350 crate engine in it. I used a 1988 model for that project. It was truly a "rocket" and a ton of fun after I upgraded the braking system.

Lazerus, that is the first thing you have posted that I agree with perfectly, what is the world coming too?

Fiero was junk, fell apart quickly and soon gone.

I always wanted one of these Fieros, the V6 is suppose to be improved. Pontiac and GM make top of the line, I settled with the Trans Am Ram Air that I'll put up against anything.

There was a design flaw with the Fiero, it doesn't get enough air to the radiator causing it to overheat. It might be worth 1500 US for around town.

My dad's best friend got one of those in the mid-late 80s. He drove it around for just under a year and loved it until. . .

One day he was driving (normally) around town, pulled over at a stop light, was sitting parked for a minute. . .then BOOM. . without warning, and for no obvious reason the car's engine literally exploded and the engine block caught on fire.

He was unhurt, but there was major damage to the car. Turns out he wasn't the only one this happened to.

For what its worth Pontiac did fix this problem later. . .though my dad's friend, (for obvious reasons) wouldn't touch a Pontiac ever again!

...heck Ray, some people have great luck with a Ford, or Chevy...while others have problems with one or the other, or both. That said, a friend of mine had a Fiero, when they were out...nothing but trouble with the model...stayed at the dealer, more than he drove it, finally sold it after about a year and a half, lost bigtime...and he had paid cash...[:0]

6.6 is a boat engine! Fiero is the one Pontiac i'd drive! Not enough leg room though. I've owned tons of junk camaro's and TA's(LOTSA LEG ROOM). For $1500 yer gonna have to make "improvements" on any car. If body and interior are in good shape that's a good place to start.

Do you know why so many retired people have Fieros? They want to drive the same car as their parents.[|)]

I've seen one/two that are decent cars. One is a friend of mine's 89 with an LS-1 dropped in. 335 rear tires. That thing is a beast.

The other was an identical one on the race track. Tube framed and all 400HP/350ci.

Every other one I've seen had been completely junked.

I have had two of them. Yes, if you are a bigger guy (I am 6'2) getting in and out of them gets interesting. Stay away from the 4 cylinders, as they do like to go BOOM.

both of mine were GT models. they both started out with the 2.8 v-6. one ended up getting a turbocharged four out of a donor car put in it. the other was one of the first GTs made in 86 that had the full sail on the quarter panel. it ended up with a supercharged 3800 from a bonneville SSEI and a 5 spd gearbox....

fun fun fun cars to drive. maintenance IS a royal pain in the posterior. They do manage to go underneath semi trailers though, especially logging trucks, after you have tweaked the suspension and lowered it just a lil more [}:)]

The later ones (87-88) are the ones to get as they were dramatically improved. Then, typical GM, they discontinued them after all the shortcomings were finally fixed.

You're in England, man. There has to be a jag/triumph/Cooper/Opel/MG/etc. for the same $ there. I live on the northeast coast and haven't seen one of them in 20 years, if that tells you anything. Plastic body and all, not made for the long run. I had a friend with one, kinda neat to ride in compared to my Volare wagon but not greatly impressive.

Ditto. There is no beating having the top down on a daylong drive through the country on a beautiful day.

Well a bike would be nice too.
