Deer Slug Sticker Shock

Just like all ammo, the cost of Deer Slugs has really jumped this year. I wrote a while back on missing a buck laster weekend and discovering my sights were off by almost a foot at 50 yards.

So today I bought 6 boxes of Winchester Platinum Tip Sabots, "on sale" for a mere 14.99 a box...it almost killed a hundred dollar bill with tax.

The good news is I am back on target and ready for next Thursday when 2nd season opens. Anyone else getting out next week ???

I'll be out in Northern Il. I prefer second season. My 4 best bucks were all shot during second season over the last 25 years or so. I shoot the Hornady SST 20 ga sabot slug. Good luck and shoot straight!!

I think the Hornady SST's are actually the cheapest ones!! (pennies cheaper!) $3.00 a shot or so....My how times have changed. Once the gun is sighted in a box should last 2-3 years!!

I shot 12 ga. Federal Preminum Federal Expander Sabots for many years, but could not find enough for second season, so I am trying out the Winchesters. I sighted in with them this p.m. Two shots to get on target and 4 almost though the same hole at 50 yards.

So hopefully I will be ready on Thursday. [:)]

Get a hard case for that and do not take it out for anything but a quick cleaning and to shoot! [:D]

Winchester is running a rebate, $5 off each box of Supreme ammo, slugs included.

Never had the problem you speak of. I have all kinds of remington sluggers around. Bought 4 boxes 2 years ago for 10.00 bucks. If you get rid of that high fluting rifled barrel you could shoot rifled slugs. They make it out to 100 yards just as easy and if you need to shoot anything out farther than that you are not hunting in the right spot.

    When you say....a box.
Are you talking about the 5 round box, or the 15 round box?

I use Brenneke K.O. slugs out of my fully rifled barrel. I have tried all the fancy sabots, and the Brennekes are the most accurate out to 100 yards, and they cost $1.79 a box.

Hey Cubs, where do you get the rebate form or is is online ????

Chrishiher, fully rifled barrel, so I use Sabots to get the most out of the gun/slug combo. Wish I could still use good old foster slugs, I still have 15 boxes or so of them.

I am a firm believer in Remington's Copper Solids! Yeah they are still $13-$15 a box, but I have never had one not do its job. Here in Indiana we have to use bow, shotgun, muzzleloader, and now rifles in pistol cartridges. I hunt with a Mossberg 500A( hey man the combo was cheap $275) open sights and this year was the first year I shot one under a 100yds. and he was monster(15pointer, grossed 185, netted 178 after deductions). I simply love a 12ga 2 3/4" 1oz. Copper Solid and have never had any deer run more that 30 yds, heck I've only had one that wasn't DRT(Dead Right There). But I still remember the good ol' days of non-rifled barrels and good ol' Remington "Lead Pumpkins" at $2-$3 a box.

Thank God I bought my ammo when it was still cheap. I grab ammo when Wacky world discount their ammo. Last time I grabbed 30 boxes of 20ga 2-3/4" #6 shot for an $1.00 an box. About 5 years ago I bought Rem slugs 12ga. 3" for $0.50 each and I grab everything that I could. I think I had over 100 boxes. The lady at the check out look at me like I am an gun nut. [:D]

I usually pick up ammo from gunshow on the last day and make deals with the dealers also, because they don't want to reload their trucks with the stuff.

I fully understand that you have a rifled barrel I am suggesting you get rid of it for a IC slug barrel. I have a mossberg 500 combo with two barrels only the slugster barrel is IC. Smooth bore no need for rifled slugs so i can shoot 1.50 slugs with accruacy out to 100 yards. IC barrels are cheaper an you come out on top because your rifled barrel is worth more but the price of slugs goes down. This is my logic behind it.
