KING snake, big pic

CHECK OUT MY KING SNAKE


What kind of snake is this? I found him under my burning barrel I chased him off. I thought maybe a garter snake but he was at least 3 feet long and way thicker than a garter.

Can't see the photo but salt and pepper snake would be a speckled king snake. Lampropeltis getula holbrooki.

Nice snakes, often don't attempt to bite. Catholic taste (that means they think Catholics taste good), feeding on rodents, birds, lizards, snakes.

Yep, appears to be a speckled king snake. They will make a meal out of a poisonous snake.

Local Name: salt and pepper snake

This handsome snake is generally black. A white or yellow spot in the center of most of the scales causes it to look speckled. The belly is yellowish with some irregular black markings. Length averages from 36 to 48 inches (91-122 cm). The speckled kingsnake can be found under rocks, logs or boards on rocky, wooded hillsides or near farm buildings. Like the rest of our kingsnakes, the speckled kingsnake vibrates its tail when alarmed. It feeds on lizards, snakes and small rodents.

that is a king snake they feed mostly on rodents although they will feed on sm birds and other snakes

It may be Lampropeltis getulus niger. Lampropeltis getulus niger is found in E. Kentucky. Lampropeltis getulus holbrooki is found in W. Kentucky.

PS If it is L. g. niger and you get tired of him my son would give him a good home.

We gots king snakes in these parts whut look much the same except the white parts are usually a light green...so he's greenish speckled and black. Does that sound about right?
