You think it's scorching back in the states? 126 degrees F yesterday in Kuwait. I don't want to hear any whining about how hot it is...and this isn't even as hot as it's going to get yet.

I do feel for all the guys over in Iraq. That heat is murder, plus carrying all that equipment on your back, and people trying to kill you. Talk about heat!! Prayors to you-all!

"Mond" what is the temp over there! We are working hard to melt all those icebergs to heat up your place so you won't have to use quite as much fuel this next winter.

Bingo! In the early 1900 the steam engine was mostly powered by dirty coal! We have come a long way since then.

the big question is: how much of that is our fault? Will any future actions of ours help the situation?

Sure getting off fossil fuels (if done in a logical and effective manner) will be beneficial to all, except fuel companies that didn't see the writing on the wall and invest in clean energy. But have any studies really been done comparing the CO2 emissions by Western industry or by motor vehicles vs. that of a volcanic eruption or massive forest fire?
We could give up our technology and the meatheads in S. America and SE Asia would still screw us by using clear-cutting and slash and burn agriculture, which are far more destructive to the environment than all our cars combined.

I am starting to believe that the hype about CFCs depleting the ozone layer was created by DuPont, which at the time was the only company that held patents on viable non-CFC refrigerants. Why, when most CFCs were consumed by the US and Europe (incl. Russia), is the damn ozone hole above the Antarctic? As far as we know there are no air currents that cross from the northern to southern hemisphere.

Zulu--One of my team leaders just came back from R&R and told me about the Kuwait horror stories. It makes me glad I'm in northern Iraq. We're back on the FOB for 2 days of maintenance and other necessities. I'm glad I was able to do PT in 89-degrees yesterday.

I would believe the DuPont hype. Nothing new about a company with a product line getting something else outlawed because they have the replacement.

As far as studies... I read somewhere that a volcanic eruption puts about 100 times the CFC's in the air than we did the whole time they were used (Pinataubo-sp-I believe was the example)

To believe everything about global warming is folly and alarmist. To compare the last 100 years to the previous 10,000 is ridiculous. To compare a temp reading from 100 years ago to one yesterday is apples to oranges in data collecting technology. To expect a model of weather in a hundred years to be accurate when I can't be certain it's gonna rain this weekend is folly as well.
