I got my finger crossed....I may be acquiring one! The timing is sorta strange. Another member made a post asking which 3 calibers we wanted to acquire. Now all of a sudden this .35 Remington pops up and the owner actually makes a reasonable offer. Did I mention that Wednesday is also my birthday! [8D]

I can't cross my fingers and toes tight enough!

Do I scope it or just leave it with open sights? I'm thinking open sights for now.

I have long wanted one! When I was 18, I made the mistake of choosing another rifle over a nice, used 336 .35 Remington. That rifle has long since departed my hands, as it just was not comfortable for me to shoot.

Hello Sig220_Ruger77 - I has no idea of your interest - otherwise I would have directed you to the pawn shop that is my receiving FFL for things I can't get on my Curio & Relic license. They have a very nice Marlin chambered in .35 Remington. Best Regards - AQH

In the 70s, I rescued one from a sad existence as a "Truck Gun". It was my Second Long Gun, and the First I chose. Probably the Favorite in the Safe, as it is the One that "fits" - no muss, no fuss, does everything I ask. I'll bet Yours will be that way for You.

    Congrats, and Happy Birthday!

Ended up with one in a trade.

If you reload, try some Sierra 200 gr RN and around 35gr of IMR 3031. I can attain sub MOA groups with this combo.

Need to match it with a Remington 8 or 81 in same caliber for ammo efficiency.

Have a 81 in .300 savage would like to get a .35 Rem to go with it one of these days preferably one of the police models with the detachable magazine

Hey kid, happy birthday. I have a Marlin 35 Remington, NIB that I bought about 20 years ago. Never even worked the action. I have no idea why I even bought it, other then it was on a whim. My dad asked if I wanted to sell it to him. I told him to just take it for his Marlin model 62 in 256 win mag. Waiting on his answer.

I like that rifle/cartridge combination myself, Jon.

If you shoot cast bullets, the .35 Rem is just about perfect. I load 200-grain flat points from an RCBS mold. At a hardness of 13-15 BHN, they shoot just as straight and kill deer just as well as Hornady jacketed RNs with the same powder charges. My Marlin has Ballard rifling, but when I once shot some of my loads through a friend's rifle with micro-groove rifling, they shot the same way from that one. So take conventional wisdom with a grain of salt.

Picked one up at my local gun shop four years ago. Since then I have taken two eight points and two nine points with it. The first three kill were bang flops, DRT. The nine this year ran a short distance but left an easy blood trail to follow. I use the Hornady Lever Evolutions in it and it shoots them great, 1.25" at a 100 yds. If shooting the lever evolutions you may want to change the follower to the dimpled type, sometimes the lever evolutions will hang up if your rifle has the standard follower. Marlin changed the follower to the dimpled type around 2007 when the lever bullets became available. Great bullet and great rifle. Get it if you can, you will not be disappointed.

I bought one from a Michigan seller here on GB several years ago. It came with a 4x scope already mounted, and other than a bit of a bluing rub on the magazine tube where it looks like it rode in a truck rack it's in great shape.
It prints 3-shot cloverleaf groups with Rem 200 gr RN core lokts, and (when single loaded) 1" groups with the 150 gr PSP C-L bullets. Recoil is minimal. I haven't had a chance to hunt with it, so I can't give a story on game performance, but the stories here on the post are pretty consistent... so I'll hazard a guess it knocks deer hard at 150 to maybe 200 yds and under.

Once you get one you're hooked! Good luck!

Happy Birthday, Jon! That looks like a heckuva birthday present!

I've been looking at those .35 Rems also, but really like having revolver/rifle combos, ie .357, .45LC, etc, etc... Having said that, I like the looks and ballistics of the .35 Remington. Especially in a Marlin lever-action! [:)]

As for your question ... leave it open sights until you have a chance to shoot it at the range and find out just how well you do with it. It might surprise you how accurate it is with open sights.

The other thing to ask yourself is, "What am I going to use this rifle for, other than shooting at the range?" The answer to that question will help you determine whether to leave it open sighted or put a scope on it, imho.

Big Al (again, Happy Birthday from another b'day "boy" of today's vintage!) [:D][;)]

A compact 1-6 variable or so would be a great match for a 35 rem Marlin, I had an older 1.75-8 on mine and it was all I ever needed.
It is a really good rifle and caliber combo.
Open sights are great for younger perfect eyes, I have some sort of optic on all my rifles now that I have reached that age of need.

I really like peep sights for iron sights. Accurate and fast. If you scope it go small and light and use the lowest mounts you can. Those see through are so high you can't position your face on the stock correctly. If you go with a low power scope, no more than 4x or a small venerable and keep it on low power you will not use the iron sights.

    Nice!
    I vote for open sights!
    It's a lever gun.

None of my lever guns have scopes. My old eyes could definitely benefit from one but somehow, I just can't bring myself to screw with the beautiful aesthetics of a lever action rifle.

    Great looking firearm!!

As others have posted, its a lever gun/brush gun. I'd personally leave it open sights.

    (Like my 1952 Burlwood stock Win 94 .30-.30.) [:D]

    Congrats.

I prefer lever guns with open sights but I reluctantly had to put scopes on my Marlins for hunting purpose. 50 yards for me anymore is pushing it for open sights. That is the main reason the Winchester s don't come out of the safe much anymore other then some close up target shooting.

Taking this one to the range tomorow to sight in for a upcoming hog hunt.

I just bought an 1894s Marlin with see through mounts and a big scope. I took them off and mounted low a Millett sp 1. It's a great combo and looks good too. My eyes won't adjust for sights anymore.

Thanks for the birthday wishes, advice, and suggestions guys! You are all way too kind and not too bad! [:D]

Tomorrow I have to hang around the house, as I have to take 1 dog for her yearly vet appointment. I might try my hand at smoking some chicken breasts as well. Friday, I will hopefully get this rifle out and shoot it.
